Reviews of inverness
Inverness is the biz
Review of Inverness (Scotland) by
Lad
Advantages:
Disadvantages:
...One of the fastest growing towns in Europe, Inverness is regarded as being the 'Capital of the Highlands'. For Scottish people Inverness makes a welcome change from the big cities of Glasgow and Edinburgh. For other visitors Inverness makes an excellent base from which to explore the 'real' Scotland. The real beauty of Inverness lies in the fact that the town services nearly the whole of the Highlands. The town itself is relatively small, which adds to its overall charm. The great thing is that although the town is quite small the huge catchment area means that the range of services available is staggering. There are very few places that have so much facilities on offer within such a small area. Going out for a drink in Inverness is not an experience to be missed. Many of the pubs attract a starnge mixture of clientel. You can find young...

What's the story In..verness
Review of Inverness, Scotland (INV) by
jules.34
Advantages: Shops and scenery
Disadvantages: Need a car to get to most scenic places
...I have lived in Inverness all my life and I don't think I would live anywhere else.
Years ago Inverness was probably a remote place and in the wilderness a bit. Nowadays it's different. There are over 60,000 people living here, and it has been classed as one of the fastest growing places in Britain. There are good rail, bus and plane networks. The airport is small but there are daily flights to and from London, Birmingham and other British cities, as well as flights going to and from some foreign countries.
In Inverness itself there are many restaurants - one of which was featured on a Gordon Ramsay show last year. There are a variety of restaurants here - Italian, Chinese, Indian, as well as British food. There are also a number of hotels.
There are a wide range of shops in Inverness - when I was young the nearest M...

Advice from a former local!
Review of Getting Around in Inverness by
MikeLB
Advantages: Its a small place, trains are cheap
Disadvantages: Buses are expensive
...So you want to get around Inverness - Where do you want to go is probably the first question!
Inverness is a millenium city, population apx 60,000. The main focal point is the River Ness running through the centre. Inverness City Centre is not that large andf to be honest you can walk from one end of the High Street to the other in under 10 minutes! For shopping transport is not really required unless you want to venture to one of the two retail parks - The Inverness Retail Park is served by the Number 10 and 1 bus, Inshes Retail Park being served by the Number 2 services. Buses around Inverness are fairly frequent, but tend to be expensive compared to the likes of Glasgow and Edinburgh. A trip from Smithon to Inverness retail park used to come in at over £1 and the journey was just over a mile! Most of the services are operated...

Inverness : Capital of the Highlands
Review of Inverness (Scotland) by
ashford
Advantages: Excellent base for the Highlands. History abounds.
Disadvantages: Unreliable weather
...Inverness,the capital of the Scottish Highlands,is a comparatively small city but has considerable charm and interest for the visitor. It has numerous historical links to the rather turbulent history of the Highlands and has a number of interesting historical buildings such as Inverness Castle, the Town Hall, and the houses and hotels along the riverside. Since it is an important tourist centre much visited by exiled Scots and their descendants from the USA,Canada,Australia,New Zealand and other countries, its hospitality industry is well developed.
The accommodation base is good with several high quality hotels, well equipped guest houses and very homely bed and breakfast places. Most of these offer comfortable rooms and very hearty Scottish-style breakfasts. Inverness, also has a wide range of restaurants including a surprisingly large...

Inverness stay at Maple Court Hotel
Review of Maple Court Hotel, Inverness by
t_sangy
Advantages: good view and food
Disadvantages: none
...We stayed at the Maple Court for two nights at the end of October
The location was fantastic - a nice 5-10 minute walk from downtown Inverness, along the river Ness. Lots of great restaurants within walking distance
The room is large, and very clean. The furnishings are a bit cheap, and the bed is just okay. Sheets and towels were clean and average. The bathroom was very clean.
The staff were great, and the morning breakfast was great. The chef will make you whatever you\'d like for breakfast.
The food was wonderful with brilliant portions. Everything was fresh and prepared beautifully. The bacon and egg scrambles and salmon crepes were terrific.
Gardens and river setting is just out of this world.
I would stay there again....

Luxurious Inverness
Review of Culloden House Hotel, Inverness by
etincelle
Advantages: Beautiful Hotel, Fantastic View
Disadvantages: Very Expensive, Location
...The Culloden House Hotel is located just outside Inverness near Culloden Battlefield. We spent a night in the hotel at the end of September.
We stayed in one of the Junior Garden Suites. The suite was gorgeous and had two rooms; both the bedroom and the lounge had beautiful views of the grounds.
The rooms were large and bright with tasteful decor. The bathroom was enormous and beautifully done in marble. I usually have trouble with hotel beds, but our bed was not too soft and extremely comfortable! I didn't want to leave!
The staff is polite, accommodating and very helpful. Unfortunately, since the stay was so short we didn't get the chance to eat in the restaurant - which by all accounts is worth a trip up to Inverness in itself! Therefore, I cannot honestly rate the food as excellent as I didn't try it.
The only drawback...

Super Caley
Review of Inverness Caledonian by
bigkenny
Advantages: Never boring always a challange
Disadvantages: Cannot afford to build a stadium
...Supporting a first division team has its advantages and its disadvantages. Inverness Caley is no exception.
I was furious when two Inverness Teams (Inverness Caledonian and Inverness Thistle) decided to merge so that they could join the senior league system in Scotland. Imaging Celtic and Rangers merging, OK not the same scale but the feelings are for a few fans.
Still the merger went ahead and the youngest team in the league was born. This gives me and most Inverness Caley fans the unique honour of being able to say we have supported our team since it was formed. Try that Rangers fans!
So we joined the league and did OK. Winning the third division in our third season in existence we have been on the up ever since. Formed in the season of 1994/1995 we are in our second season in the first division.
Last season probably contained our...

This season
Review of Inverness Caledonian by
Timelord
Advantages: Good to watch, not too far for me to travel to watch
Disadvantages: Very far for almost the rest of the country to watch
...Inverness Caledonian Thistle Football Club - the longest club name in British football. Also the most northernly club in this season's First Division. When Caley were promoted at the end of season 98/99 many thought that they would go straight down again. Not so. Caley Thistle have improved and improved. No more so was this realised by their 3-1 demolition of Celtic in last season's Scottish Cup. By this reckoning Caley are going to be serious contenders for promotion to the Premier Division. They have proved that they can stand the test at this level and they will go on to greater things. If they do gain promotion it will be a fairytale story. A club which began life only a few years ago making it all the way to our top division. This season will be it....

The place to stay when visiting Inverness.
Review of Drumossie Hotel, Inverness by
highlandpark
Advantages: Fantastic standard in both the rooms and the restaurant.
Disadvantages: Lack of leisure facilities.
...When my wife was offered a job in Inverness the company offered the whole family a weekend trip for the second interview.
So my wife, 8 month daughter and I drove from just outside Edinburgh up to Inverness. When approaching Inverness from the South, on the A9 the hotel is perfectly signposted and cannot be missed.
As you drive into the car park you would be forgiven for thinking that the hotel itself does not look anything special. Trust me when I say that it is the outside, and outside of the building only, that will make you think this.
We had booked over the phone and when we went to check in something had gone wrong and there was no record of our booking, the start of a bad experience you might think. No, the staff dealt with it, without any fuss or hassle. Another room was booked, we sat and waited in the beautiful lounge...

Inverness as a place to visit
Review of Inverness (Scotland) by
kb277
Advantages: Plenty activities, good nightlife at weekends, safe, scenic,
Disadvantages: weekday evening entertainment can be a bit poor,
...well you may think i will be biased about inverness due to my living here for my (i would say entire life but take a couple of years out where i lived in other places like aberdeen, tain and the like) life. however i have been to most major cities in the uk along with plenty of small villages and towns too. i will give you as accurate a description and opinion as i possibly can on the town/city (as it is now).
Inverness is currently undergoing a major re-development to its city centre with new wider paths being laid and road system being turned upside down, shaken around a bit and re structured aparently in an effort to reduce traffic and congestion. To be honest the mess is kept to a minimum and the noise level seems reasonably low throughout this work and the finished product does actually look very pleasing to the eye...
