A great all purpose JavaScript guide
Review of JavaScript the Definitive Guide - David Flanagan by
JsonRenlan
Advantages: covers almost everything, well organized
Disadvantages: none that I can think of
...There are plenty of JavaScript books out there, but this is definitely one of the best. First of all it's O'Reilly and that means one thing, the best information for professional developers in almost every field of computer science programming.
The book is very well structured. In Part 1, Core JavaScript, you get a very detailed presentation of the language, including its advanced features such as closures. In Part 2, Client-Side JavaScript, you are presented both the basic Document Object Model and the W3C standard DOM. You have a very interesting chapter on cookies and other client-side persistence techniques. The book also deals with JavaScript and XML, demonstrates how to use JavaScript serialize/deserialize objects into/from XML documents, how to do basic parsing It also introduces the E4X extension to the core JavaScript language...

Improve your website with JavaScript
Review of Javascript - Javascript by
keit
Advantages: extends HTML, easy to use
Disadvantages: error checking can be frustrating as language is very tough on syntax
...What is JavaScript?
Firstly, it is not a full-blown programming language like Java. It is a scripting language that can help to add interactivity to web pages. Most JavaScript code is run on your web browser, so obviously your browser must support, however, you can run server side Java script code.
How much does it cost?
It is free, no downloads required, simply add your code in notepad. Most modern html editors now support JavaScript and include some basic scripts with them
How easy is it to use?
JavaScript is not as simple as html, nor is it as complex as a full-blown programming language. It is however a lot more syntax dependant than Vbscript. In the past I have found it quite frustrating, as it is not very clear when you make a mistake, as to where the mistake actually is. Hover, it is a lot more powerful than html and can...

Urg Whoops Maybe
Review of JavaScript for the World Wide Web - Tom Negrino, Dori Smith by
Manx
Advantages: Internet page. An easy start.
Disadvantages: No real reference value.
...There is every reason to believe that the Visual Quickstart Guide “JavaScript for the World Wide Web” is, in its way, a good book. I suppose.
I bought the book as someone who can program, well, let me clarify that further, I’m a Computing Science student who tends to sleep during his programming lectures and therefore, to date, I’ve never written any hugely successful C (++) giant programs but I I’m not a novice either.
The idea of juggling the components of an array around is not something I would balk at.
This book is not written for me.
This book is written for the new type of computer “programmer” that the Web has created. The authors have carefully highlighted those people who wouldn’t be programming their own “Goto 10” loop if they didn’t have a web page to design. So, the pages of this book set out to clearly...

The Best Scripts in Internet
Review of www.hotscripts.com - HotScripts.com by
iapm
Advantages: big collection, fast server, often updated
Disadvantages: some links not work
...HotScripts is an Internet directory that compiles and distributes next Web programming resources: scripts and documentation of Perl, ASP, C and C++, Flash, Java and JavaScript, PHP, Perl, Python, XML. This site is geared toward webmasters and programmers who are looking to enhance their Web sites and intranets with dynamic development tools.
Site content big link list (for example, section "Perl Scripts and Programs" consists of over 3000 named programs and scripts) and only some of them are commercial! All scripts and programs are categorized by ads. You can find exactly what you want in a few secons....

JavaScript: the Definitive Reference
Review of Member Advice on Computer Books by
Nova9
Advantages: comprehensive, clearly written, well organised
Disadvantages: not recipe book, not for beginners
...Perhaps a good book on JavaScript does not exist, or JavaScript sucks, or I've yet to read the Goodman bible but "JavaScript the Definitive Guide" by David Flanagan published by O'Reilly is the clearest and most comprehensive description of the COMPLETE language and its implementation in Netscape and I.E thatI've seen. It is not for beginners. It is not good as a recipe book. The examples need to be worked through and understood. You cannot just scan the code and pick out the bits you want. Even so, if you're going to be serious about JavaScript then this book is an essential reference.
In my view the dearth of good books on the subject is due to Javascript being a messy language further messed up by fights between the big two browsers providers.
For a recipe book I'd try the Visual Quickstart Guide:
"JavaScript for the world...

THE reference book for HTML4, DOM, CSS & JavaScript
Review of Dynamic HTML: The Definitive Reference - Danny Goodman by
malross
Advantages: Covers every aspect of DHTML with excellent reference to browser inconsistencies
Disadvantages: Will slowly be going out of date - keep checking for revisions!
...Dynamic HTML - The Definitive Reference, by Danny Goodman
As a reference book for HTML, the Document Object Model (DOM), cascading style sheets (CSS), and JavaScript, this book is unsurpassed. The quality is something I've come to expect from the O'Reilly series of internet development books.
Not only does it cover every detail of these topics (up to HTML 4.0), it also states which browsers, and which versions, support each element. This alone is enough to make it an indispensable reference for the web developer. However, it is also clear that a lot of thought has gone into how the information in the book is organised, with good cross-referencing sections, as well as a good example-laden introduction and well-structured main sections on each of the technologies that combine to produce DHTML.
If I were stuck on 37 Signals...

Overview of the Java technologies that enrich the core Java language
Review of Java by
SimonH
Advantages: Platform Independent, Ideal for Internet/Web development, Free Development Environment, Rich in functionality, Difficult to accidentaly crash your system (Robust exception management and memory management).
Disadvantages: Slower than some lower level languages such as C++.
...This article will raise your awareness of the Java technologies that enrich the core Java language so that you know what everybody is on about when they talk about 'Java'. The Java technolgies examined are:
Java Virtual Machine (JVM)
Applet
Java Plug-in
Java Database Connectivity (JDBC)
Servlets
Java Server Pages (JSP)
Java Beans
Enterprise Java Beans (EJB)
Enterprise Java Applications
JAVA VIRTUAL MACHINE (JVM)
What is the Java Virtual Machine (JVM)?
Code written in the Java programming language is platform independent and compiled in to a Java class. When you use this class as an application, the Java class is interpreted by the Java Virtual machine so that it will perform the same action (e.g. display a window on the screen in Windows 98 Operating System, or on a SUN UNIX operating system). This is achieved by the Java...
