Soul Diva Sings Jazz & Blues
Review of Lady Sings The Blues - Diana Ross by
IanPhillips
Advantages: The wonderful tracks My Man, Don't Explain etc
Disadvantages: The dialogue interupts musical flow
...Lady Sings The Blues premiered to an eager, anticipating audience in October 1972. The public flocked in droves to the cinemas to see this much-hyped film, whilst critics watched intensley and eagerly sharpened their pencils.
Soul singer and Motown legend, Diana Ross controversially took the role of the tortured Jazz legend, Billie Holiday and deservedly won wide critical acclaim for her harrowing and riviting performance in the film which subsequently gained her an oscar nomination (though Diana sadly lost out to Liza Minnelli for Cabaret - people claimed this was down to Berry Gordy's over-kill campaign to get her to win where Berry sent various extravagent gifts to members of the comittee which was merely perceived as a ploy to get her to win).
Critics were instantly silenced on hearing the movies quintessential and divine...

drinking blue w.k.d
Review of WKD Blue by
elliebelle9
Advantages: easy to drink
Disadvantages: gives you a blue tounge
...i have been drinking blue w.k.d for a few years now, and heres my oppion of it for you, hope you like it :)
look - blue w.k.d is obviously blue in couluoring and in a nice shaped bottle and it is a bigger bottle than your normal ones e.g bud and pills.
taste - it taste like blueberry in a way, its very easy to drink and doesnt have that sickly after taste that some alcopops have, it also doesnt leave that annoying "furry teeth" feeling you can get from sugary drinks.
its very refreshing and altogether a nice taste.
effect - I find that blue w.k.d does make you rarther merry but not in a sleepy way. I have had a great many good nights out drinking blue w.k.d and would highly recommend it to anyone to try :)
price - anything ranging from £1 cheapest on happy hours etc etc too £3 on friday and saturday nights
well i hope you...

Enough Blues to Keep Me Happy
Review of Blues Brothers 2000 - Original Soundtrack by
Soho_Black
Advantages: Some decent rhythm and blues
Disadvantages: Film dialogue in the wrong places
.... The "Perry Mason Theme" has a down tempo, almost bar room jazz type feel to it, with perhaps a touch of soul mixed in. It's not really a song I'd listen to on its own, but it's one that will always remind me more of the Blues Brothers than it ever will of Perry Mason.
Once more, the Blues Brothers get a song, as Elwood sings with Mighty Mac for the first time. "Looking For a Fox" runs to much the same themes as "Cheaper to Keep Here", although it's a far more upbeat and up tempo number. It's a great rhythm and blues number, although I can't hear it without it reminding me of how bad a dancer John Goodman (who is Mighty Mac) is in the film.
Any fan will recognise "Can't Turn You Loose" as the introduction music for the Blues Brothers from the first film and it's tough to not hear Cab Calloway's intro from that film over the top. I...

Comin' Home to the Blues
Review of Comin' Home To The Blues Vol.2 - Various Artists by
Martinscholes
Advantages: Every one you can think of
Disadvantages: none
...Williamson is a good example of what I mean.
Chuck Berry? Does he belong on this Blues CD? Most definitely, he does. As well as helping to create the new Rock and Roll sound, Chuck Berry was a very accomplished Blues man. As his song Wee Wee Hours is a firm testament to.
And the First Time I Met the Blues by Buddy Guy? If this doesn't send shivers up and down tour spine, baby, you ain't GOT no spine!
I made mention of Etta James. Her song Tell Mama is a good, romping song, which, with its horn section reflects the style of Blues epitomised in the film the Blues Brothers, which was, in all probability dipping very tentative toe into the waters of Rhythm and Blues.
Willie Dixon's Walking the Blues, however, gives more than a nod towards Dixieland Jazz. I think it was something my father would have approved of, him being a fan...

One of the best CDs to come out of the blue
Review of Out Of The Blue (The World Will Know) - Baby Blue by
rabbiter
Advantages: Some amazing, original tracks
Disadvantages: Not to everyone's taste
...true and done in a very casual style which has me absolutely hooked. The background music is great, not prominent, blending into the background and emerging only when necessary, it allows our attention to be given to BB and the lyrics.
9/10
Track 16 - Ace and Invisible drop
Track 17 - London N.E.W.S. - Baby Blue, Sway, J2K & Incisive
This track was always going to be amazing, it features four of the BEST rappers in London and they do sound fantastic. This song is another aggressive one which is not to everyone's taste, but it really is worth a listen. This is BB album so I will mention her part in the song, she does add that ingredient with gives the song another sparkle, her female voice contrasts the men and makes the track even better, well in my opinion anyway.
9/10
Track 18 - The world will know
This song sounds...

HIGH-HEELED BLUES FROM A MULE KICKIN' MAMA
Review of High Heeled Blues - Rory Block by
nfp2
Advantages: May be the best contemporary white female blues singer and acoustic guitarist you'll ever hear.
Disadvantages: None
...But in 1981 she went back to her roots via the traditional music record label Rounder Records, and from then until now Block has recorded more than a dozen blues albums.
In 1995 her album When a Woman Gets the Blues won the W. C. Handy Award for Best Acoustic Blues Album of the Year, and she was selected by the Martin Guitar Co. to endorse their strings in a national ad campaign. In 1998 she won the W. C. Handy Award again, this time as Traditional Blues Female Artist of the Year.
“HIGH HEELED BLUES,” THE ALBUM:
To me, though, Block was at her best in her very first anthology of blues standards, long before the whole world would learn just how good she was, and maybe even before she would even realize herself just how far she would go.
The album High Heeled Blues was released in 1981 on Rounder Records as an LP and re...

W.K.D. Blue
Review of WKD Blue by
ellen_be
Advantages: nice taste, alcoholic!
Disadvantages: very sweet, turns your mouth blue
...Last night I was out with some friends and had a WKD Blue for a change. I have had them a couple of times and quite like them.
I paid £2.50 for mine which is not too bad for a pub, but I'm sure you can get them for half that in the supermarket!
It comes in a normal 275ml glass bottle and has 5.5% alcohol! not bad for an alcopop!
The drink itself is a nice blue colour and probably has some toxic dye in it but who cares!!! The only bad thing about that is it leaves your mouth and tongue blue and if you get any down your clothes (very easy after a few!) then its a nightmare to get out!!
the taste is nice and sweet, a bit bubbly gum flavour, quite hard to describe. I could drink one or two but after that they get a bit sickly
Nice drink, shame about the pub price!...

Blues Brothers - Soundtrack
Review of Blues Brothers - Music From The Film (Original Soundtrack) - Various Artists by
JezM
Advantages: Blues music, what more can be said? Many great legends of blues and soul.
Disadvantages: Not enough songs
...guitar/bass rhythm and drum beat plays host to some wind instrument solos. These instruments feature saxophones and trumpets (both muted and normal). Not as enjoyable as a few other tracks, but still worth a listen – 6/10
3 – Gimme Some Lovin’ – A combination of blues and rock, this song is one of the faster songs of this album. The guitar is the focal point of this track, while the wind instruments provide support. Jake sings again, with a supporting vocalist in Elwood Blues (Dan Aykroyd). A good, upbeat song. – 9/10
4 – Shake A Tail Feather – Jazz, blues and soul meet for this great, upbeat song. The main instrument is an electric piano played by the irreplaceable legend that is Ray Charles. Charles is also the main vocalist of this track and has the Blues Brothers as supporting vocalists. Again, the wind instruments provide...

Eliza Blues certainly doesn't give me the Blues!!
Review of Eliza Blues Restaurant, Dublin by
gilly_v
Advantages: Absolutely splendid food, very friendly and efficient staff, good prices, great wine
Disadvantages: None
...As a frequent visitor to Dublin (my husband and I have been every year since 2001), I feel like I've eaten in most of the restaurants in the city centre, but every year we make at least one trip to the Eliza Blues restaurant.
Every time we've been here we have been seated in a different place - ranging from near the window to on the slightly raised platform a the back. Each location has been wonderful for different reasons and we've had no complaints in that respect. Each time our waitress has introduced herself promptly and offered us a pre-dinner drink from the extensive menu. They have an excellent selection of wines, beers and spirits as well as liqueurs for after dinner. We have sampled a number of their bottles of wine and have never had a bad bottle, always thoroughly enjoying our well-priced choice.
The food has...

Blues for Stuff and Steph- a review
Review of Blues For Stuff And Steph - Mike Piggott Quartet by
frankwright
Advantages: Sophisticated and beautiful
Disadvantages: None!
...I love all kinds of music, really, but in my private listening time I tend to listen to complicated music or expressive singer-songwriter types- my tastes run from Jethro Tull and Frank Zappa to James Taylor and Jackson Browne. I had begun to get interested in Jazz- listening to Bill Bruford and Brand X, Weather Report, those kinds of things.
I admit that I had not really listened to this kind of jazz before my first encounter with "Blues for Stuff and Steph" - given to me by a friend- let alone, ever heard of Stuff Smith. I had an old CD of Stephane Grappelli somewhere but hadn't listened to it for years.
By the time I'd got to the fourth track, Nuages, I was mesmerised. The violin, so soulful, crooned to me, the piano, a beautiful soft accent like a waterfall behind the trees, the bass and drums keeping it all together very...
