Reviews of journey's end
A short but poignant journey
Review of Journey's End - R C Sherriff by
perfectlypolished
Advantages: Ideal study aid for the GCSE student
Disadvantages: None
...I read this book because my daughter was studying Journey's End for her GCSE English Literature exam this summer. I had never read it before, nor seen the play, so I thought it would be good idea to read it for myself so I could then discuss some of it with her. I should point out that Journey's End is actually a play and not a novel and it is the play that is being studied at GCSE, not this book in particular. Also, when reading Journey's End you need to keep in mind that it is written for actors with the intention of it being performed to an audience and so comes complete with stage directions.
I am reviewing the Heinemann book edition that is produced with the GCSE student in mind. Heinemann produce books, software and online resources specifically for schools, colleges and their students. Details of their learning resources can...

The journey is what matters, not the destination
Review of Kino's Journey Vol.1 DVD by
berlioz
Advantages: A little series of such simplicity that makes you fall in love with the world again.
Disadvantages: Can be frustrating for its constantly changing perspectives.
.... She simply comes, sees, and leaves, often without leaving any kind of impression to those she has met. In fact, it is Hermes that on occasion wonders out loud why some things are the way they are, not Kino. For Kino, her only real occupation according to her is to practice drawing her guns before every sunrise and then move on to another place.
KINO'S TRAVELS
What I really love about Kino's Journey is that it relies so much on subtlety to convey its message. There is no plot to speak of; rather the show relies on the vibes created by Kino's everyday life. Kino has a quiet and philosophical view of life, with no delusions of trying to change the world. Take Episode 3 where she arrives in a place that is expecting the end of the world to take place on the morning of her departure. Not to get stressed, or beginning to question...

Another long, strange and wonderful journey
Review of Dreamfall: The Longest Journey (PC) by
thereddragon
Advantages: Wow, the sequel to The Longest Journey!
Disadvantages: A bit short compared to the original, puzzles may be too easy for some
...of beautiful paintings.
I had issues, at first, with Zoe as heroine. I found her rather limp and bimbo-ish, with a dreary, irritating voice, and was not at all confident that she was going to be credible heroine material. But as she goes on to have to deal with more and more dangerous situations, she becomes more resourceful and feisty. You see her begin to grow and develop which is very satisfying, and in the end she becomes a very admirable individual. So, if you feel the same irritation with Zoe that I did to start with, do persevere as it will be worth it.
This may be a puzzling game for those who haven't played the original, as so much of Dreamfall refers back to events from the first game. I would strongly recommend picking up a copy of The Longest Journey and playing it first, for maximum fulfilment. You can actually still buy...

A Journey back in time!
Review of Frontiers - Journey by
david_1967
Advantages: Great pop/rock from US masters and re-issued with missing tracks
Disadvantages: Some fillers and most prefer the previous release 'Escape'
...that can be found on the re-issued CD - 'Ask the Lonely' and 'Only the Young'. If not for these omissions the LP could arguably have been a bigger hit than it was for 'Ask the Lonely' is perhaps my favourite Journey track ever!
'Edge of the Blade' is a great song about the break-up of marriage and the dealy war of attrition fought in the courts -
'You're caught up in the power, a blue magical maze,
Now the circle is broken in a spellbinding rage,
Better see if you're holding the wrong edge of the blade.
If it's sharp, if it cuts - enjoy yourself!'
Neal Schon plays a wonderful guitar solo to play the song to its fading conclusion and perhaps ends the best track on the album.
With the song 'Frontiers' Steve Perry, as is his wont to do during many tracks but never more so than here, sings behind the beat which at first can have...

Take a Journey
Review of Journey, The - 911 by
Tinkerbella1
Advantages: The Journey, pure pop
Disadvantages: Its very cheesy!
...911. Lee was the main singer in the band although occasionally shared this role with Jimmy. Spike occasionally rapped on songs as well as doing backing vocals and despite a petition in Smash Hits Magazine for him to sing lead Spike didn’t feel comfortable to do so.
911 were formed in 1996 and split in February 2000 after releasing three successful albums (The Journey, Moving on and There it is) and a not so successful Greatest Hits album. However, after a year and a half of normality 911 were offered by promoters a chance to get together and tour the UK, as neither Jimmy or Lee had got anywhere with their solo careers the band agreed and in November 2001 did a month long tour of the UK. The tour was a huge success and showed there was still a demand for the midgets of pop so since then they have continued a few shows a year in clubs...

An exciting musical journey
Review of Journey To The Centre Of The Earth - Rick Wakeman by
eddybennet
Advantages: A fully formed musical interpretation of the classic novel
Disadvantages: Occasional "bum" notes and mastering
...it has been patiently supporting the band throughout the entire CD. A couple of lines from Greig's "Hall of the Mountain King" heralds the end of the album as the journeying companions leave the subterranean world from Mount Etna.
Although the album is strongly attributed to Rick Wakeman (and, to be fair, he did write the whole thing!), this album comes across as much more of a performance collaboration than some of his other releases. His keyboards certainly take a leading role in the arrangements, but this is delicately balanced amongst the rest of the hundreds of musicians on stage.
Slight "bum" notes aside, the record is testament to what can be achieved with just a 16-track recording studio when facing a full orchestra, choir, and 6-piece band. Combined with a fantastic quality insert that features photographs from...

It's the end!...of England!
Review of Lands End - Cornwall by
leofluffy69
Advantages: beautiful part of the country, superb views and great history
Disadvantages: quite far to travel
.... This describes the journey between Lands End in Cornwall to John O Groats in Scotland.
The exhibition shows videos and audio records of the people who have travelled the 'End to End' challenge. The many ways in which people complete the challenge are shown in the video clips. The timeline along the wall shows the many organisations, companies and people who have taken up the amazing feat one of which I would love to do but can never imagine it.
In a darkened room you can watch a sped up version of a car simulation showing the journey. This is quite interesting for tourists to see as they can pin point their homes town as the car passes by. The journey is shown along the wall giving the time and distance travelled.
*Doctor Who Up Close*
We went to Lands End to see this attraction. The Doctor Who exhibition was advertised readily down...

Journeys With George
Review of Journeys With George by
eddie7sf
Advantages: Shows a unique side of a powerful man.
Disadvantages: Technical quality is rather poor.
...Depressed by the outcome of the US Presidential election? Then take heart in this documentary, a candid film about George Bush that shows he isn't quite as stupid, or evil, as he's made out to be.
Journeys With George is the best kind of documentary. Something entirely accidental that was caught on film. As film begins, George Bush is campaigning to win the Republican nomination for President, long before he won the White House. As he campaigns, select members of the press follow him around, reporting what he is up to. One of them is Alexanda Pelosi, and she happened to bring a video camera.
There is no way that Pelosi could have known that Bush would win the nomination (at the time, John McCain looked the most likely candidate), and so the documentary seems to gain importance as it continues. Winning the nomination...
