University Accommodation PARK WOOD
Review of Kent University, Canterbury by
angela888
Advantages: Very clean and spaceous!
Disadvantages: Live on a hill, so you'll have a trek coming up from town!
...I am currently studying at the University of Kent and living on campus accommodation - to be more precies, PARK WOOD.
I ahve to say that the rent is very reasonable for what you get, aronud 55-60 pounds a week (electricity and gas bills included in the rent). You have all the amenities around you, plus ALL your friends. With car parks dotted around campus! Yes this university LETS STUDENTS BRING THEIR CARS ALONG! However you might have to fight for the space when you live in Park Wood.
Anyway, the main campus is about 10 minutes casual walk away from the furthest of Courts, and on the way you pass the Park Wood supermarket and an indoor Blockbuster's movie renting machines. The gym is only 5 minutes away.
ALSO, LAN CONNECTION! FAST INTERNET ACCESS IN NEARLY EVERY ROOM!...

TYLER COURT
Review of Kent University, Canterbury by
robynpennock
Advantages: Probably the nicest place to stay on campus
Disadvantages: It's a tad expensive!
...When I applied to go to Kent University it was at the last minute (about 2 weeks before my results!) and so did not get to apply for accommodation in the normal way. I was assigned my accommodation by the University and was given the option to live in Tyler Court or to find my own place to stay!
So I decided to take up my place in Tyler Court Block C, which is (if I do say so myself) probably the best place to live on campus.
APPLYING
From what I have heard from the people who actually applied properly, to apply for accommodation you either fill in a form which they send you in the post (I'd recommend doing this ASAP especially if you hope to get in here!) or you can fill in an on-line application form which will be detailed in the letter accompanying your postal application. All the details of the rooms and rates can be found...

A - Z of Kent
Review of kent.gov.uk by
wiggglypufff
Advantages: Totally comprehensive guide to Kent
Disadvantages: Although navigation is easy, the volume of information is enormous and to fully explore the whole site could take days
...www.kent.gov.uk is the official Kent County Council website. Not the sort of site you’d pick to browse if you’re looking for thrill a minute fun and excitement, but if you have an interest in Kent for any reason, be it from the point of view as a current or perspective resident, business person, or visitor, it is well worth a look.....
“Welcome to Kent, the Gateway between the UK and Europe, and to Kent County Council's website. This is a new site and content will be regularly added and updated. We hope it gives you lots of information about Kent, Kent County Council and its services.”
The home page is visually plain and simple, displaying the short greeting message (above), in basic black arial font on a crisp white background. The main category headings of the site are displayed, in bold red font...

Friendly Atmosphere
Review of Kent University, Canterbury by
salvolati
Advantages: Friendly atmosphere
Disadvantages: Exams in a row - a possibility!
...One of the first things which struck me about the university of Kent was how friendly everyone was. Leaving everything you know and moving to a uni campus may not seem like the most easy thing to do but afer the first week I had already established friendships which lasted throughout the first and second years and hopefully for many more to come. The advantages of this uni are a) it is easy to get to Europe b) there are therefore many Europeans at the uni which makes life more exciting c)there are excellent programmes which allow students to study abroad d)there is an all too tempting nightclub on campus e)a short bus ride takes you to the historical city of Canterbury. There are few disadvantages to Kent uni however exam rules have changed forcing some students to have to take exams in a row which was previously unacceptable, though...

Best Uni in the country
Review of Kent University, Canterbury by
pikebe
Advantages: Friendly, great social,
Disadvantages: Expensive to live in town
...Having been to UKC for three years, I can look back and safely say that I have had a fantastic university career. Friendly from the start, UKC opens it's arms to new students unlike some other universities around the country. There's a huge variety of clubs and societies and with the halls being self contained, you really get socially involved and the university becomes your life. As well as the fun fun fun side of things, UKC also has an exemplary scholastic record. With many departments scoring very highly in the government league tables (biology and psychology getting 24 out of 24 each), there are worse places to study.
Being so close to the continent has it advantages, attracting a huge number of students from across Europe. There is a truly multicultural feel to the place, with Europeans, Asians, Africans and Americans all living...

Excellent Computer Facilities
Review of Kent University, Canterbury by
sailormn
Advantages: Verdict: Good studying environment and excellent computer facilities
Disadvantages: high school fees
...I've studied at University of Kent for a year in 1998.
Strong points:
(1) Serene university enviroment with campus on a hill-ducklings could be seen wondering around and chasing one another on campus during spring time
(2) Good computer facilities with most computers being Pentium configuration
(3) A wide variety of computer books in the library
(4) Good nightlife
- student union film card costs £10 for a year which entitles you to watch movies on campus movie theatre on every mon, thu, fri and sat evenings
- disco on campus
(5) Adsa transport to and fro campus during school term, great for examination periods when time is scarce.
(6) Very near to Dover port, great breakaway to France and Belgium.
Weak points:
(1) High school fees for overseas students abt £9000 per year (same for all UK uni.)
(2) As campus situated...

Uni Great, College Let down
Review of Kent University, Canterbury by
brettnina7
Advantages: Nursery facilities
Disadvantages: Disorganisation, poor structure, poor communication, unhelpful
...I am currently a student at Canterbury College. I expected that being in one of the UK's biggest centres for learning that I would be getting first class education. But although the University seems to be fullfilling its expectations, the College lets Canterbury down. No matter how pretty they try to make it look with all the new buildings it is so disorganised it lacks any structure.
My class had an issue with a teacher and we wrote a formal letter to the head of our department explaining the trouble we were having. In our next lesson the teacher asked us what the problem was and we felt completely put on the spot. We had to lie and say that we were not happy with the timetable and the length of the lesson, we could hardly all start saying how we didnt like her teaching methods and didnt feel like we were learning anything, (she...

Some fields in Kent
Review of Marden Meadow, Kent Wildlife Trust by
torr
Advantages: Commonplace
Disadvantages: Rare
...be that. It would also be a safer place - safer for the diversity of nature, and safer from our reliance on monoculture, on chemicals and on high energy inputs for our food production. We as a species are taking a gamble that all these things will be sustainable, even in the face of the changing climate that our numbers and activities engender, and it is a gamble that may well be lost. One of the values of places like Marden Meadow is that they remind us we should think about such things.
What's more, there's no charge for entry, which makes it especially good value for money. If you feel you ought to be giving something back for your enjoyment of the place, you can always make a donation to Kent Wildlife Trust, which owns it.
* Who's in charge *
Kent Wildlife Trust is an independent charity dedicated to nature conservation...

Kent fault the day at all!
Review of Kent Meet January 2004 by
emmorticia
Advantages: met new people, and some that I'd met before
Disadvantages: got up at 7.30am...
...On a leary Zeterday, a mort of fellowly foreigners came a limb-of-a-way to run agin a parcel of reemer men of kent and kentish men. Wus a plum pleasant day, helving with jawsies and jokesies, and nabbling while filling the parish oven with a dossett (or a cantell) of the local Spitfire. I be properly pleased that I went to the first meet to-year.
Or, for those of you who do not posess a copy of "Kentish as she wus spoke" by Alan Major:
On an overcast Saturday, an large number of companionable non-Kentish visitors came a considerable distance to meet up with a number of excellent inhabitants of the county of Kent. It was a very pleasant day, gossiping with chatterboxes and witty people, and holding idle conversation while filling our mouths with a small dose (or an indefinite number!) of the local Spitfires. I am thoroughly pleased...
