Skiing in Kitzbuhel-for those who go to SKI/BOARD!
Review of Kitzbuhel (Austria) by  wompie99

Advantages: Good Slopes, Good Bars, Short airport Transfer
Disadvantages: Dated Ski Lift System

...Ive been heading to the slopes 2/3 weeks a year for the past 20 years and have been all over the world, but until now never to the infamous Kitzbuhel. Booking last minute, I expected big things of this place , so famous for its runs and its village style resort. The slopes did not dissapoint, nor did the weather, skiing in early march is risky and with Kitzbuhel being at 'low-level' I was worried. The amount of snow seemed to suprise even the locals. Pistes of varying degrees of difficulty were well kept, but changed in difficultly with every corner, which made it great fun for the more experienced of us, but hard going for begginers. There were a lot of 'Tracks' which were very flat in places and walking was common, Snowboarders beware! The lift system was also very dated, with one main gongala giving access to the mountain... The Alps In Summer
Review of Kitzbuhel (Austria) by  the_mad_cabbie

Advantages: Magnificent scenery.
Disadvantages: Not a lot.

...~ ~ Trust ‘the mad cabbie’ to visit one of Europe’s most renowned ski resorts in the height of the summer! Kitzbuhel is a small Austrian town situated high in the Austrian Alps in the famous Tyrol area of Austria, and probably best known for its famous downhill ski race which takes part here every winter season, and which attracts the cream of the world’s skiers. It’s about an hour and a quarter drive from the nearest main airport in the city of Salzburg. The drive from Salzburg itself is a memorable experience, with roads which wind their way past enormous mountain peaks, tumultuous rivers, and huge lakes, and which immediately gives you the sense of awe that never really leaves you when visiting this truly spectacular part of the world. I was struck straight away by the huge predominance of four... Read review

My Hot And Wet Alpen Love Affair
Review of Kitzbuhel (Austria) by  Sexy-Kay

Advantages: The scenary, the mountains, the food, the air - everything!
Disadvantages: If you are not a walker, you maybe could get bored - nah! It sometimes rains

...I'm in love, I'm in love, I'm in love! As I lay in my enormous bed I look through the open doors leading to the balcony and beyond. The early morning light gently sucks up the darkness exposing the peaks of the mountains and the rich plushness of the lower meadows. Mmmm, if this isn't paradise then I don't know what is. You know how it is when you arrive somewhere and you straight away think, 'this is me, it's where I belong'? This is how I felt about Kitzbuhel. The minute I stepped off the bus the clean air and rich colours made me feel alive and invigorated. St. Moritz? Aspen? Pah! Kitzbuhel is 'the' mountain destination to be. The town is situated in the Tyrolean region of Austria midway between Innsbruck and Salzburg. It's 800m above sea level and nestles between the Kitzbuheler Alps and the Wilder Kaiser mountains... These mountains are for more than just SKIING DOWN
Review of Kitzbuhel (Austria) by  CaptainDisaster

Advantages: Fantastic scenery, good transport links, not too expensive - if you know where to go...
Disadvantages: Too tourist-oriented, expensive shops

...Well, I've never been to Kitzbühel in the snow. But it seems extremely odd to me that, with the very beautiful natural surrounds of Kitzbühel, with the majestic Wilder Kaiser mountain range in the background and the impressive Hahnenkamm and Kitzbüheler Horn on opposite sides of the valley, the only interest some people have in them is throwing themselves down it on one or two small pieces of carbon fibre (or whatever it is they make snowboards and skis out of these days). What's all the hurry? It took us three hours to climb up the Hahnenkamm, and I'm glad to say that for once we were not overtaken by any old German ladies steaming up there on zimmer frames. (It's happened before… far more frequently than I'd like to admit!!), but every second of it was well spent. Going to the cable-car station at the bottom of the Kitzbüheler... Read review

Glitzy Kitz
Review of Kitzbuhel (Austria) by  Mikew79

Advantages: Great skiing for intermediates, fantastic night life, brilliant resort
Disadvantages: Some queuing for lifts, crowded buses

...I have just come back from a fabulous week's skiing in Kitzbuhel. I had visited the resort over 10 years ago and was interested to see how much I could remember and how much had changed. Kitzbuhel is a world famous resort situated in the Tirol, Austria. It is a charming place with cobblestone streets and painted buildings. The resort itself is not very high lying at only 2,600 feet above sea level but still has a pretty good snow record, we were really lucky as all the pistes were open and snow conditions were truly excellent. We booked the holiday with Cristal holidays, flying from Gatwick to Salzburg on a Thomsonfly charter flight. the transfer from the airport took about an hour and a half and we duly arrived at the Sonnenhof hotel, a short walk from the town centre. It was too late to collect our skis and boots on the first... Read review

brilliant hotel nestled in the alps!
Review of Tirolerhof Hotel, Kitzbühel by  mcduff16

Advantages: great food, friendly staff, lovely room
Disadvantages: a bit of a walk from kitzbuhel town

...in the lounge. Staff were extremely friendly and polite and did everything to ensure we had a wonderful stay. The receptionist is also very helpful. The only disadvantage i would say is that the hotel is a 20 minute walk from kitzbuhel town, although the hotel operates a free minibus into town every evening between 8 and 8:30pm. There is also a bus stop situated directly in front of the hotel. A bank with atm, cafe restaurant and a big sports store is located 6 minutes away and 10 minutes away are two supermarkets. I would definetly recommend this hotel to anyone wishing to stay in Kitzbuhel though if you are after a more central location with nightlife i would suggest a hotel in Kitzbuhel town.... Read review

Five Star Luxury At A Three Star Price
Review of General: Austria by  the_mad_cabbie

Advantages: Superb accomodation. Brilliant food. Excellent facilities. VERY friendly owners.
Disadvantages: Not a thing!

...~ ~ One of the problems of going on holiday is you can never be 100% sure that the accommodation you have booked is going to live up to expectations. The Internet has improved things, because now you can log on and check out your selected hotel or guesthouse before you actually part with any hard earned dosh. (Well, most of the time anyway) ~ ~ But even then you can be caught out, if the hotel is slightly less than ethical, and portrays itself online in a way that is entirely different to the reality. We got badly caught out in 2001, when a hotel we booked as part of a package holiday in Tuscany, Italy, turned out to be only slightly better than a pokey wee bedsitter. So the mad cabbie was determined that the same mistake would not reoccur in 2002, on the family holiday to Kitzbuhel in the Austrian Tyrol. We checked out all... Read review

Born in Heaven
Review of Tyrol (Austria) by  herbb

Advantages: great skiing, great ambience
Disadvantages: high season - high prices - crowds

...These days the skibuffs among you will watch the annual Hahnenkamm races in Kitzbühel, Austria´s prime World Cup racing event. Yes, and it´s "Kitz" (meaning kidgoat, Bühel standing for hill) which has been Austria´s pioneer skiing resort together with the Arlberg region (St.Anton, Lech and Zürs) for decades. While I write down my memories of 38 years of skiing the world´s top slalom skiers prepare for their first run on the "Ganslern". Friday´s event was the SuperG, yesterday the famous downhill race on the "Streif" took place – both won by Stephan Eberharter, deservedly leader in the overall standings and successor of injured legend Hermann Maier. Back to my roots: in 1964 my family of five – we lived some 50 km east of Vienna - took off for Kitzbühel in the Tyrolean Alps which was a day´s trip by car back then. Nowadays... Read review

Arosa - perfect late snow
Review of Arosa by  zachxx

Advantages: Great late season snow
Disadvantages: Expensive ski hire

...Arosa is perfect for late-season skiing or snowboarding. I have just been there (mid-April) and there was fresh snow every day, and clear skies most days. There is a great variety of runs, with plenty of beginner slopes on the Weisshorn Mittelstation and plenty of interlinking red and black runs, with accessable off-piste on the Hörnli. (In fact, the only resort which I have been to which is better is Kitzbühel, which has some fantastic off-piste, but the snow is practically gone by this time of year.) There is a regular and free bus service linking Arosa and Inner Arosa (which takes about 5 minutes). Good bars in Arosa include: Casino bar, Los, Sitting Bull, Laetitia's is good for apres ski (but see below). Good restaurants: Orchidee Palast (Chinese), Restaurant Derby (Swiss). Avoid Laetitia's Mexican restaurant at all... Read review
