Kung Fu at its best
Review of The Matrix DVD by tigerblade

Advantages: Excellent film
Disadvantages: none

...A sci fi Kung Fu film?? It could work.... And it did. With one of the best story lines ever and a field full of well known actors, the Matrix was sure to be a hit. It was, a big hit, a VERY big hit. And even more so with me. Unfortunately the actors had to train alot and even Keanu doesnt have the skills of the nation but they do very well alongside Laurence Fishbourne. The squel will include Jet Li, the master of Kung Fu and wires which will make this film infinitely better.... Read review

WING CHUN WING TSUN
Review of Wing Chun Kung Fu by eaglesas

Advantages: Fitness, self protection ability, Confidence, Suppleness.
Disadvantages: Pain from sparring (depending on training method), time taken to learn.

...BASICS ------ Martial arts, particularly complex ones, consist of a number of forms, which can vary immensely. Some forms are modelled off the way animals attack, and so for instance when using a crane form, then the person utilizing this will take on a stance or attacks reminiscent of said creature. On the other hand, forms may be targeted at specifics, such as disarming a well armed opponent, or indeed defending from multiple attackers. Each form has it's place, and when correctly used be a skilled player, can be deadly. KUNG FU ------- Wing Chun is a particular style of Kung Fu. Kung Fu is the ancient chinese martial art. It has been developed over a number of centuries, and to show just how effective it is, it is still being employed today by Chinese police forces, and is commonly thought of as one of the greatest martial arts... Not a kung-fu flick, an epic. Sit near the back.
Review of Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon DVD by Ecofreak

Advantages: Fantastic, wonderful, nothing you'd expect
Disadvantages: It finishes

...Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon is NOT a kung fu movie! It is an epic comprised of three delicious Chinese myths. It has two deeply involving romance storylines. It addresses the peak of human spirit attainable through lifelong devotion, honour and discipline. It looks at the highest and darkest potential in all of us. It offers the viewer dreamlike fantasy, humour and bittersweet tragedy. At the same time, this is one of the most peacefully beautiful films you will see, shot with a decadent innocence and love of the stories. The characters are utterly spellbinding, the English subtitling of Chinese dialogue detracting absolutely nothing at all from the colour and flow. And the fighting… or is it theatre.. or dance? Who cares, it’s wonderful. You don’t have to be a kung fu fan to appreciate the choreography, which sets... Read review

Economy - Less IS More
Review of Wing Chun Kung Fu by psiclone

Advantages: Great style to learn, designed to defeat other styles, economy of movement, links well with other styles
Disadvantages: Not much really. Just don't hit yourself when chain punching

...First off, I don't quite know why Wing Chun (sometimes spelt Wing Tsun) Kung Fu is listed under Karate, since they are totally separate arts, but there we go. Wing Chun originated from China, where warrior monks at the temple of Shaolin perfected their martial arts. The Wing Chun system was designed by several Grandmasters as an efficient system to combat forms such as Karate. It is in effect a compacted form of Shaolin Kung Fu, and focuses mainly on economy of movement. Martial arts can be taught in several ways, but basic principles are always most important. They are however, boring. Karate may appeal more to people who like 'showing off' their martial arts skills, and who want to learn something they will enjoy from the start. Wing Chun Kung Fu is by no means harder to learn, but teachers often teach using more traditional methods... Read review

Why all football players should be taught kung-fu
Review of Shaolin Soccer DVD by gp1234512345

Advantages: Funny, great effects
Disadvantages: not enough features, some people don't like Chow's style of humour

...This is another in the line of kung-fu films by writer/director/actor Stephen Chow Chow stars as Sing, a kung-fu master turned pauper who spends his life just trying to get by and attempting to get people to pay for kung-fu lessons from him. He firsts meets Mui(Zhao Wei), a shy pastry chef who uses her command of martial arts to make sweet cakes. Then, after a fight in which Sing displays his considerable mastery of the "steel leg" discipline, he meets the legendary "Golden Leg"(Man Tat Ng), a washed up former football star who was to convinced to miss a vital penalty which ruined his career. He suggests that Sing applies his talents to the game of football. Sing then rounds up the other of his shaolin brothers and forms a team to enter a prestigious tournament with a prize of $1 million. There they come up against numerous weird... Read review

US MA Film that doesn't suck!
Review of Drive by cdawkins

Advantages:
Disadvantages:

...There are many types of Martial Arts/Kung Fu film including The genre setters like: the Once upon a time in China series The great fight films: Fist of Legend, Tai Chi Master - Jet Li Prodigal Son - Sammo Hung Warriors two The classics (those that suck part 1): (I'll probably get flamed for this:-) Shaw brothers Those that suck part 2: Any American Kung Fu film except maybe ONE: Drive with Mark Dacascos and Kadeem Hardison is one of those rare films which isn't widely known (much like Mistery Men), but is a gem of a film). Mark Dacascos is martial arts expert Toby Wong who has a device in his body that some criminals want. Kadeem Hardison is the poor sap who gets involved just by being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Nothing original! Just great fight scenes that would give Jet Li a run for his money and use of props... Read review

I am Wong-Fei Hung from Fu-Shan
Review of Once Upon A Time In China - Complete Trilogy (Wide Screen) by tayloa22

Advantages: something for everyone, even women love these movies
Disadvantages: A little dated now, sometimes a little to tongue in cheek.

...This is the better way to see Jet Li in action, before making westernised movies. Great Kung-Fu action sequences telling the story of a real chinese legend Wong-Fei Hung. There have been many films made portraying this person but the Once Upon A Time in China movies tell the legend the best. Some small elements of fantasy within some fight scenes but for the most part raw hard hitting martial arts. Films are better in cantonese with subtitles rather than cheesy dubbing. This box contains the first three of a total of six movies. The other three movies are titled Last Hero in China, Once upon a Time in China and America, {Kung-Fu shenanigans in the wild west} and Once upon a Time in China 6 {avoid this, this is the only one that doesn't star Jet Li and it's very poor} Much like Rocky through the course of the movies you see a love... You have got to watch this one!
Review of Kung Fu Panda DVD by sophies1703

Advantages: comedy all the way through
Disadvantages: none at all

...The plot: This is the story of a panda named po, he is lazy and irrelevant and quite dopey, but he loves kung fu (not that he's any good at it) His love of kung fu doesn't come in handy for his father though who owns a noodle shop. Po finds out that the dragon warrior is getting chosen and rushed off up to the castle to see the chosen one and get locks out of the gate cause he is a second too late, he then keeps trying to get in the castle and puts fireworks onto a chair, when they start going off he ends up falling in front of the one who was about to get chosen and ends up being chosen himself. Then his journey really begins, the five who have been getting trained to be the dragon warrior are not happy with po and don't think he belongs there but then his kung fu master learns the secret to training him surprise surprise is food... Rustle me up some Kung Fu Hustle
Review of Kung Fu Hustle DVD by l-m-n-o-p

Advantages: Amazing visuals and action scenes, funny moments
Disadvantages: Very very silly

...Stephen Chow isn’t a name I’d come across before, but after this film, expect to be seeing a lot more of him in years to come. As a comedy actor, he’s been amusing Hong Kong audiences for years, but it’s his last two films, Shaolin Soccer, and this, Kung Fu Hustle, which have earned him worldwide fame. Although at 42 he’s a bit old to be called the next Jackie Chan, the resemblances are there, with his films being a mix of comedy, martial arts and action. And like Jackie Chan, as well as acting and doing all his own stunts, he also writes, produces and edits his own films! In Kung Fu Hustle, set in 1940s China, a city is being terrorised by the Axe gang, a sophisticated yet deadly group of fighters who kill their victims with - yep, axes. The only place which is safe from the gang is Pig Sty Alley - partly because they’re so poor... Read review

Wong Fei Hung! A must see!
Review of Once Upon A Time In China (Wide Screen) by mandydon

Advantages: Brilliant action scenes/over the top comedy/romance!
Disadvantages: Jet Li's overuse of wire works!

...to Aunt Yee (Rosamund Kwan). Fu hooks up with Master Yim (Yen Shi-Kwan), who wants to supplant Wong's status as the number one kung-fu guy. To accomplish his goal, Master Yim hooks up with the bastard band of Chinese who want to get Wong Fei-Hong. Eventually, all the evil parties make a deal with the bastard foreigners and try to ship Chinese women to America. Their plan: to entice Chinese workers to head to America as coolies. Aunt Yee is kidnapped as part of this plot, and Leung Fu objects. Now he and Wong Fei-Hong must save Yee AND come to terms with the reality of gweilos in Asia. It's like this: the Chinese have kung-fu, but the foreigners have guns. A definitly must see movie for chinese martial arts film lover and anyone generally interested in martial arts movies with a touching story.... Read review
