Reviews of london guide
manages to make london look good
Review of London Eye, London by
carys
Advantages: great views of london, reasonably priced
Disadvantages: only lasts half an hour
...I went on the London Eye some time last summer, when the evenings were light and the sky was clear. It turned out to be the perfect time to go - about 9pm on a cloud-free June evening, and the sun is setting just about the time you get to the top of the wheel. We could literally see for miles - I can't remember the exact distance but I think our guide person pointed out Windsor castle, and that must be about 25 miles away. So you can imagine the spectacular views of London you get from going on the London Eye. Even though I live in London it was a fun experience - I've always enjoyed doing touristy things here and it was great to see all the major sights in London during one half-hour ride. And we had the benefit of a beautiful sunset. I would definitely recommend it, but make sure you choose your day and time wisely....

Great half hour
Review of London Eye, London by
gkb
Advantages: Different views of the sights
Disadvantages: not knowing what is what
...If anyone is planning a dayout in London then one of the must see attractions has got to be the Millenium Eye. Until you actually see it then you will not believe just how big it really is. If you have a clear day then it is a terrific way to see the whole of the London skyline. One piece of advice would be to invest in the guide book as otherwise you will spend the whole time guessing which buildings are which as there is no guide in the pods.
All in all a great fun way to see things from a different view, even if heights are not your thing it will not be a problem as due to the slow speed of movement it is easy to forget how high you are even if the wind is whistling around the pods....

The only book you'll need about London
Review of London - Nick Yapp by
iamsuperted
Advantages: Arranged easily and very informative
Disadvantages: Large book may seem daunting and the index isn't as comprehensive as it could be, but it suffices
...Whilst browsing through a library for something completely unconnected, I found this book, and as someone who visits London regularly, I was interested to see what this book had which others have missed before. The size of the book may seem daunting to start with, but that is simply because it is so comprehensive. I have raed many "guide books" before, and they have all been useful in their own specific areas, but this is useful in nearly all subjects concerning London. In the introduction, the author stresses that it is not a guide book, but simply a book ABOUT London. It does not contain much information about shopping specifically, yet there is a section about where to go for certain items and he goes through areas geographically. Eating out is covered extensively too which may be useful for many people. The easiest way...

Have a day out in London for 2 quid
Review of Getting around in London by bus by
LBoy
Advantages: Cheaper than the Tube
Disadvantages: Not very reliable
...to pick up a useful leaflet ‘Travelling in London’ from Tube stations. It includes a central London map showing the major bus routes and main tourist attractions. It also has a list of London Travel Information Centres. More detailed bus maps ‘Central London Bus Guide’ and ‘Night Bus Guide’ can be obtained from the centres. You can also call the 24 hour helpline ‘London Travel Information’ for information and advice: 020 7222 1234 (Outside UK: 44 20 7222 1234).
NB Certain special bus services do not accept Travelcards, Bus Passes or Saver tickets.

A good means of transport
Review of Getting around in London generally by
Liberty1
Advantages: Comfort and the experience
Disadvantages: can be difficult to track one down
...When travelling about London one of the easiest ways is to go by taxi, normally or perhaps I should say hopefully, your driver will know the quickest and therefore the cheapest route for you to take,. They normally seem experts at diving in and out of traffic, where the average driver would fear to go. Add to this ,the fact that most are excellant tour guides, if you are a vistor and will normally give you their opinion( hopefully unbiased )on most things. The black cabs are very comfortable to travel in and in fact are often considered a tourist attraction themselves....

The place to see
Review of London in general by
Liberty1
Advantages: Something for everyone
Disadvantages: can be crowded and tiring
...For any tourist either from other parts of the UK or overseas, London is the place to visit, with a mutitude of parks, theatres, excellent shops, historic buildings, art galleries, the Milleneum Dome ,you are almost spolit for choice as to where to go first. Wear comfortable shoes and try not to do everything all in one day, well it would be impossible to cover it all in a week ,yet alone 24 hours. Guided tours either walking or on a bus are freely available and with give any tourist a more general idea of the main attractions, plus plenty of photo opportunities....

The Historical Sites of Interest For London
Review of London (England) by
keepdancing
Advantages: plenty to do, good nightlife, historical
Disadvantages: expensive
...London is one of those cities that has everything. You can shop in it's designer stores, sightsee, take a boat along the Thames and view the city from a great height on the London Eye. You can also visit some very significant historical sites; and that's what this review is about.
For any history fan, The Tower Of London is a must-see. With intelligent guides just waiting to grab you and tell you the history of the entire place, you can learn as you wander around this great historical site.
If you're planning on visiting the Tower of London, it's worth your while to pre-book a ticket. In high season, queuing can take over six hours. The entry fee is around £10, but it's well worth it if you want to see a place where history actually happened.
Avoid the tourist traps advertising a sightseeing trip around Pudding Lane, where the Great...

An eye opener! hoho
Review of London Eye, London by
jimstrong
Advantages: Very good value, amazing views.!
Disadvantages: Not long enough at the top
...The London Eye was something i was excited about when i first heard about it. Then i heard that it cost £7.50 for a ride and was a bit put off. Dont be. It takes 32mins to rotate (at about walking pace) and is well worth it. You get an amazing view of the river and the rest of London and on a clear day you can see for miles. The cabins do not make you feel frightened of the height and are air conditioned. They are large enough to avoid claustraphobia also. There is a running commentry by a guide if you want it and in the evening i hear that the views are even more spectacular than the day. It is well worth it and i will be returning in the near future to 'get away' from the hussle of the city for a while.
If you go try and go on a weekday so as to aviod queues or pre-book because it can take a while if you go on the weekend although...

And it has pictures too!
Review of Eyewitness Top 10 Travel Guide to London - Dorling Kindersley by
purdy
Advantages: Small and Compact yet extremely informative
Disadvantages: NONE NONE NONE
...I noticed on the member centre that Dorling & Kindersley have posted a competition on their books; this truly was an opportunity not to be missed for myself. We often use the Eyewitness and also Top Ten Guides when researching our trips abroad. Having written a general review on the Eyewitness Guides previously, l shall concentrate solely on the Top Ten Guide in this review.
When l am taking a shorter city break for perhaps 3 to 4 nights l tend to opt for a top ten guide - a condensed version of the larger eyewitness book. I am currently devouring the Top Ten Guide to London as we are visiting the capital in around 6 weeks and l have no doubt that l will probably be able to quote the guide verbatim by the time we take the trip!
Why Top Ten?
I love the top ten guides as it is colourful - there is nothing like pictures to whet your...

Vindigo - London City Guide
Review of Vindigo - Vindigo London by
spiritoflondon
Advantages: FREE, all the info you need for london, works on all palm OS devices
Disadvantages: takes up around 700k
...I’ve long been a fan of the Vindigo city guide application having used the New York version on a number of occasions. Now it is available in London.
If you live or work in London and own a Palm OS device then this application will transform your PDA from an expensive diary to a lifestyle device that will never leave your side.
Vindigo is a City Guide application with three channels: Eat, Shop and Play. You tell the application where in London you are (e.g. Oxford Street and Dean Street) then you simply decide what you want to do: eat dinner, grab a snack, go for a drink, do a spot of shopping, go clubbing go to the cinema…
Vindigo then gives you the details of all the venues sorted by distance. It will give you the full address and telephone number, a review (this comes from established content providers such as the Evening Standard...
