* Mamma Mia - The Musical *
Review of Mamma mia by  xdonzx

Advantages: Funny , Entertaining , Full Of Energy
Disadvantages: Pierce Brosnans' Singing - Otherwise None!

...When I saw Mamma Mia! advertising on the television a couple of weeks back , I instantly knew it was going to be a film I loved. I went to see the film a few days after it's release at my local cineworld. I was glad I hadn't chosen to go on the day of it's release , as my cousin who had gone to see it a day after it's release said that there were so many people wanting to see it that they couldn't let everyone in. I had planned on going to see this film , however usually when I want to see a film I think 'yeah I'll go and see that' however I never actually get round to it , and wait until it comes out on DVD . Although this time I was determined that I was going to go and see the film , even more so when my cousin told me it was fantastic. So there we were in my local Cineworld. The film was set to start at 8pm. We arrived early... Read review

Take a Chance on Mamma Mia!
Review of Mamma mia by  amytheduck

Advantages: Everything! Great cast, great musical numbers, very funny
Disadvantages: Pierce Brosnan's vocals could have been better, but nothing really!

...You've undoubtedly seen the adverts on the television, heard about it on the radio or noticed the posters that adorn many a roadside billboard. Perhaps you've seen the title of the film - Mamma Mia! - and immediately dismissed it: a musical based on ABBA's songs? It couldn't be anything but naff, right? Wrong. Mamma Mia! is a heartwarming, rip-roaring success of a film, based on the highly-acclaimed West End musical of the same name. Since the film's release on the 10th July 2008, Mamma Mia! has had huge success at the Box Office, heading straight to number one and knocking Hancock into second place. The film has some huge names attached - Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan and Julie Walters to name but a few - and I highly recommend it. --So, What's It About?-- You might be forgiven for thinking that a musical based on ABBA... Mamma Mia - full of fun and spontaneous singing!
Review of Mamma Mia! DVD by  pmcds

Advantages: Such fun all over
Disadvantages: Not sure about some of the casting

...Every now and then a film comes along that I am persuaded to watch, against my better judgment, and I end up liking, although not sure why. These films are somehow a mismatch of casting talent, and some strange plotline, but weirdly, it works. Mamma Mia is one such film, with its all star cast and glitzy dance routines and a soundtrack to make any 70s and 80s child grin, whether they like Abba or not. Mamma Mia as a stage production seemes to baffle me. I had never seen it, and wondered how they could make a musical full of Abba songs without it having anything to do with Abba's lives at all. Now I have seen the film, I understand - it is a story created around the words of the Abba songs, cleverly woven into each other, and with some comic elements. The 1 hour 42 minutes is packed with fun on a beautiful Greek island setting, and is... Read review

Mamma Mia! How could I resist you?
Review of Mamma Mia! DVD by  jeaniecz

Advantages: funny, ful of energy and the great timeless ABBA songs
Disadvantages: bit too silly in places, no really surprising plot turns

...Mamma Mia! Finally I've seen the film and afterwards I was jumping with energy the movie boasted me with, so I couldn't not start writing this review. I can't tell about elsewhere, but here in Prague Mamma Mia! has become a symbol of this summer, full of fun, dancing and singing, love, sun, friends, joy and happy ends. It was my first time that sitting in the cinema I would feel all the ppl there shared sth and created such a happy and cheerful atmosphere like this time when everybody sang along to the songs. Cast Meryl Streep - Donna Amanda Seyfried - Sophie Pierce Brosnan - Sam Colin Firth - Harry Stellan Skarsgard - Bill Christine Baranski - Tanya Julie Walters - Rosie Running time: 100 mins. Director: Phyllida Lloyd Screenplay: Catherine Johnson in cooperation with ABBA members Benny Andersson... Read review

Mamma Mia? Super Trouper!
Review of Mamma Mia - Bristol Hippodrome 2008 by  KarenUK

Advantages: Excellent musical, great Abba songs, energy, loads of fun, entertaining
Disadvantages: Cheesy and camp - but I LIKE that!

...DOES YOUR MOTHER KNOW? The 2008 international tour of Mamma Mia began in Bristol - the writer Catherine Johnson's hometown. For a Christmas present, my mum bought three tickets for myself and my two teenage daughters to go to see it, so there we were, in the too-small seats of the grand circle in the Bristol Hippodrome on January 7th. THE NAME OF THE GAME As most people know, Mamma Mia is a highly successful musical (and the film version is to be released this summer) which uses Abba's music to help tell the story. The plot itself though has nothing to do with Abba; it is more of a chick flick type plot or a romantic comedy. Sophie is twenty years old and lives on a quiet Greek island with her mother, Donna. Sophie is planning her wedding to her boyfriend Sky and wants her father to be there - but she doesn't know who he is... Read review

Mamma Mia here we go again
Review of Mamma Mia! DVD by  Maxlarndison

Advantages: A Real Family Film
Disadvantages: None

...This review is for the film only. It was actually my twins that wanted to go and see Mamma Mia as they love musicals, I was a bit sceptical but we went any way and this is what I thought about the film. A Bit about the Film - The film is set on a idyllic Greek island. (Meryl Streep) who plays Donna is a single mum who owns her own hotel and has a daughter (Amanda Seyfried) played by Sophie who is getting married to (Dominic Cooper) who plays Sky. She is desperate to invite her father to her wedding because she wants him to walk her down the aisle, only she doesn't know know who it is, all she knows is that it will be one of three and she only knows this because she secretly read her mums diary and found out that she was with 3 men all around the same time. (Colin Firth) who plays Harry is a proper gent, (Pierce... Read review

Oh Mamma
Review of Mamma Mia! DVD by  grafter123

Advantages: Everything about it.
Disadvantages: Nothing really if you take it all as fun.

...Despite the fact that Hubby was always more of a fan of Abba music than I was, I could not persuade him to go with me to the cinema to see Mamma Mia'. So, last Tuesday afternoon, a girl friend and I trotted off to the matinee performance at a local Cineworld. Did Mamma Mia live up to expectations then?, I hear you ask. The answer is a resounding YES, and then some. MAMMA MIA. This film is based on a very successful stage production. Both the film and the theatre version are musicals, the music being on the whole well known Abba songs. There were a few songs that I had not heard of and I assume that these were written for the show. The story is set on a Greek Island and I noted at the end of the film that it was filmed on the Greek Islands of Skopelos and Skiathos, as well as having some studio filming. Now although I have never... Read review

mamma mia here i go again
Review of Mamma Mia! DVD by  jo_field26

Advantages: great cast
Disadvantages: pierce lack of musical ability

...audience buzzing, laughing and smiling by the end of it, whilst tapping their toes the whole way through the film. With all the Abba songs from Mamma Mia, Dancing Queen, money money money, honey honey, Lay all your love on me, Super Truper, I have a dream, the winner takes it all and gimme gimme gimme are but to name a few of the songs that appear in the film Although whoever cast Pierce Brosnan in a singing role must have been tone deaf as he sounded like he was strangling a cat, it certainly looked like the whole cast enjoyed making this film and it had some great comical few minutes at the end. Well worth going to see, just a shame in my opinion about Pierce Brosnan singing ability... Read review

Here we go again! Mamma!
Review of Mamma Mia! DVD by  DixieChick10

Advantages: Energetic fun.
Disadvantages: Some bad notes.

...Mamma Mia Went to go and see this for my birthday today and absolutely loved it. The acting yes could have been better and they could have hired actors that maybe sung a little bit better than Colin Firth & Peirce Brosnon but other than that it was an enjoyable film, but goes a bit unseen by the younger generation (my sister) who only knew one song in the whole film. What is Mamma Mia? A film adaptation on the west end musical based on the songs of the pop group ABBA. The film follows Sophie Sheridan (Amanda Seyfried) as she plans to get married to Sky (Dominic Cooper) and her doting mother Donna Sheridan (Meryl Streep). However there's one thing missing from her life, her father. She reads her mother's diary and finds out she has three possible fathers: Sam (Peirce Brosnon), who was the love of her mothers... DOES YOUR MOTHER KNOW? THIS FILM IS FAB!
Review of Mamma Mia! DVD by  KarenUK

Advantages: Funny, warm, great cast, great songs, a real feel-good film that will make you smile
Disadvantages: Very slightly inferior to the stage version

...Last night, I went to the cinema to see Mamma Mia with my mother-in-law (while my husband, son and youngest daughter saw Hancock). I saw the stage version of Mamma Mia in January this year and thought it was brilliant. I'm also a big Abba fan and have been for about thirty years, so I'm in the ideal demographic for this movie. The cinema was almost full and those seeing Mamma Mia were admittedly mainly women, but from the elderly down to young kids. There was a bit of a party atmosphere too, lots of giggles and it almost felt like being on a hen night - which was fun. But would the film live up to its hype or be a pale shadow of its stage version? THE STORY The basic plot to Mamma Mia (on stage and screen) is that Sophie is getting married. She's twenty and lives on a small Greek island with Donna, her single mother. Being... Read review
