Disadvantages: Perhaps not easy to find as it is off the main streets.

...Aberdeen Maritime Museum is located in Ship Row, close to the harbour in a historic area of the city. The importance of the fishing industry in this part of the country is explored along with the oil industry and local shipbuilding. There are loads of interactive exhibits which kids will enjoy and the large oil platform model which stretches over three levels is amazing to see. There are fantastic views out over the harbour area from the top floor of the museum too. The older part of the building - Provost Ross's house is very interesting with it's low ceilings and winding staircases. It houses lots of memorabilia from things like the ferry services and lifeboats. The museum has a small gift shop selling all kinds of sea related gifts, books and toys. The Leading Lights cafe in the basement area serves lovely coffee and cakes... Read review

...If there is one place to visit while you are in Liverpool, the it must be The Albert Dock. It is in essence the main attraction of the city and it is a good place to start if you are looking for a bit of history. The Albert Dock is a converted warehouse which was presumably bustling with activity in Liverpool's hey day as a port and centre of trade. It currently houses three world class attractions, namely, The Merseyside Maritime Museum, The Tate Gallery of the North and The Beatles Story. The Maritime Museum for example offers a glimpse of Liverpool's past through its dioramas depicting the passage of slaves and later, immigrants to America. It gives the onlooker an idea of how Liverpool came to be what it is today, an ethnicaly diverse society. Aside from museums and galleries, there are also plenty of shops to lure the souvenir... ...Much has been written about the attractions of Tallinn, an undeniably beautiful and well-preserved city, and I was lucky enough to have the chance to take in the sights of the old town recently. While wandering around the picture postcard streets, I stumbled across this interesting museum totally by chance - despite its situation in one of the most well-known parts of the old fortifications, the tower known as Paks Margareeta ('Fat Margaret'), which is mentioned in most guidebooks for the Estonian capital, you'd be forgiven for walking right past without giving it a second glance. Whereas is many other cities, museums vie with one another to catch passing tourists, the maritime museum here does not really go in for much in the way of advertising! ...--LOCATION AND ACCESSIBILITY-- The National Waterfront Museum is located in Swansea's Maritime Quarter, about 5 minutes walk from the main city centre shops. From outside Swansea, exit the M4 at junction 42 (west) or junction 47 (east) - just keep following the brown signs - the Museum is clearly signposted and is very difficult to miss. There is a large 'pay and display' car park a short distance from the Museum (2 minutes walk). The car park costs £5.00 for a full day. Users of the car park who are visiting the Museum should inform the car park attendant that they intend to use the Museum, whereon you will receive a £3.50 discount voucher redeemable in the Museum's shop on that day. So parking really only costs £1.50 which is very reasonable as there are other things to see close by (Swansea Marina, amusement arcades, shops... Read review

The Maritime Museum until the early seventies was housed in a small museum based at Pickering Park Hull . This was away from the city centre on the road to Hessle . I remember this museum as a child in the fifties . Of course at that time it looked vast but really it was quite compact . In the grounds were whalebones ; relics of our bygone fishing days , when Hull was a huge port .In the sixties Hull was the third largest port in England . Hard to believe now . As fishing declined I suppose the powers that be saw the importance of preserving artefacts from that past . How right they were and what... Read review

...The Albert Dock in Liverpool is the main tourist area of the once thriving Liverpool dock lands. Located within a 5-minute walk from the city centre it is easy to get to. The Albert Dock is home to the old Granada studios where good morning was filmed as well as the world famous Fred's weather map located in the dock. You will find the Tate art galley, which is free to enter and is full of historic and modern art and is a pleasure to visit. The beetle's story is a museum dedicated to the lives of Liverpool's most famous band. Finally the other museum is Liverpool Maritime museum which is an informative history of the Liverpool Docks including Liverpool's involvement in the slave trade. Shopping is good for arts and crafts, as well as memorabilia. There are countless small shops situated around the dock, which you can pick up... Read review

...Peterhead is the biggest white-fish-landing port in Europe. It is also an oil industry base (perhaps as an annexe to Aberdeen, but no less important). It is known locally as "the Blue Toon", not as you may expect if you have visited, as a result of bodily parts rapidly turning blue in the cold north east wind which prevails here. Indigenous Peterheidians are known as "Blue Mogganers", deriving from the traditional sea-boot stockings of the whalers which originally gave Peterhead its place in maritime history (check out the town's museum). The "moggan" was a stocking, and the Peterhead whaleboatmen traditionally wore blue. As very distinct from the local rival port, Fraserburgh, whose inhabitants were known as "Puddlestinkers", but that's another story.... Read review

...The Albert Dock is the major visitor attraction in Liverpool and is an amazing reincarnation for it was a decaying dock area not so many years ago. Today its roaring success is because there is a lot to do and see at this attraction.As the whole world knows the most famous pop group ever were Liverpool born and bred and the Beatles Story Exhibition pulls in a lot of visitors. Liverpool.at one time,was the world's greatest port and the base for migrants from Europe to go to the New World. The fascinating story of this is well told in the Mersey Maritime Museum. For culture buffs there is the Tate Gallery North to visit and the Customs and Excise Museum attracts a large number of people. The place has an excellent range of cafes,bars,pubs and restaurants and if you fancy a shopping binge you have a lot of choice with the likes of book... Read review

...~ ~ I’ve lived here in Dublin for over twenty years now, and it was only recently that I discovered that this small museum, the Maritime Museum of Ireland, even existed. I was stuck out in a seaside suburb of Dublin, Dun Loghaire, (where the ferries from Holyhead in Wales arrive) waiting for a fare to the airport in my taxi, and with an hour to kill. So the weather being rather pleasant, (a rare enough occurrence this year!) I parked up and went for a wee wander to take the sea air. ~ ~ The Maritime Museum is located in an old church called (wait for it) the Mariner’s Church, up a small side street called Haigh Terrace, just off the Dun Loghaire main street, and right beside the side entrance to one of the main hotels in the village, the Royal Marine. The old church has a bit of history attached to it. It was opened in 1837... Read review
