Haifa: the Beautiful!
Review of Haifa, Israel (HFA) by
TheChocolateLady
Advantages: Bahai, Carmelite, Cable-Car and more
Disadvantages: Not terribly touristy (which could be an advantage), not all that much to see
...Haifa isn't the best known city in Israel, but it is the third largest city and despite my love for Jerusalem, if I had to choose another place to live, then Haifa would be it. Besides it being built around Mount Carmel, it also touts one of the most beautiful sites that Israel has to offer - the Bahai Temple and Gardens. But there's more to Haifa than just that - unfortunately, not a whole lot, but still... let me see if I can pique your interest.
From the bottom upwards:
Haifa is built on a mountain on the sea, and the mountain is located on a small a peninsula near the north of the country. Being surrounded by water, it became a port city, and therefore it has a large shipping industrial area - including a large high-tech park on the western and northern sides. On the eastern side of the peninsula, there is a small bay which also...

Carmel
Review of Carmel (California) by
aspo
Advantages: scenery
Disadvantages: expensive
...Carmels a sweet little american village but thats about it! There is the 17 mile drive that gives some fantastic scenery and a chance to see some squirrelys and sealions which is very sweet. After that we went into the town to look around. It was fairly quite and very expensive. And we managed to get a parking ticket for parking on the the left side of the road because they drive on the right, or some similar pethertic reason. Apart from that it is a nice plave to visit on the way to San Francisco, but nothing worth staying for....

Awaken
Review of Awakenings - Oliver Sacks by
historywitch
Advantages: Fascinating, compelling, unique [insert lots of praiseworthy words here]
Disadvantages: Wealth of medical terminology, lots of literary allusions/psychology/philosophy-can be hard going
...In 1918 there was a massive outbreak of encephalitus lethargica, a virus that is also known as ‘sleeping sickness’. Millions became very sick and a great many died, but for the survivors there was a bigger challenge waiting for them. Over the following years (between one and forty years later) they started to manifest distressing mental and physical symptoms; facial and bodily tics, uncontrollable movements and speech, frozen limbs and frozen actions, all similar to Parkinson’s disease. Many of these patients ended up in asylums as their families became unable to care for them and slipped out of sight and out of mind. In 1969 a young doctor entered Mount Carmel asylum to examine the two hundred or so sufferers who had in many cases been there for decades. He tried a new drug on these patients, L-Dopa, and the results shook the medical...

Breathtaking
Review of Highway 1 (California) by
sarah_stitch
Advantages: Glorious countryside
Disadvantages: could not see everything, really need to spend a week or more exploring this area
...I spent a large amount of one summer exploring California with my father, part of our trip included the very scenic journey from Los Angelas to San Francisco along Highway 1, a journey which I will never forget.
The total time taken to explore this area was 3 days, are first stop was at Solvang, described as the Denmark in California!! Full of wind mills and other european wares, quite bizarre in the middle of California.
Our second stop was Santa Maria, where we spent the night and had a wonderful meal, the following day we travelled to Morro Bay, a large rock peninsula, with stunning views all around, we paddled in the shallow waters then proceeded to San Simeon where we spent our 2nd night of the journey.
We spent most of our third day exploring Big Sur, Carmel and Monterey. We drover around Carmel's 17 Mile drive then explored...

What would you cover in chocolate and caramel?
Review of Mcvities Caramel Chocolate Digestive by
gf6141a20
Advantages: Tasty, good value
Disadvantages: Caramel layer is a little thin
...When I was in my local supermarket looking for treats for the kids I came across these new biscuits from McVitie's. The packaging was easy on the eye and they looked nice (very tempting). A caramel and chocolate digestive biscuit.... yum yum I thought.
After putting away all my other messages i put the kettle on and got comfy with my new biscuits and a cup of tea in front of the TV. My first bite didn't have me to impressed so I dipped it into the tea and wow, what a diffrence. The classic dunking action made it nice and soft and made my taste buds tingle. I had to have more.
The chocolate and carmel mix well together when dipped and the biscuit topped it of for me as I like a digestive all ready with out the chocolate and carmel.
These tasty biscuits can be bought at most grocers and supermarkets for just over a pound...

Tasty Taz!
Review of Cadbury Taz by
ady_ankle
Advantages: 10p/taste/ everything
Disadvantages: nothing
...tongue.
The inner caramel is so tasty and similar to the Cadburys caramel bars, only this caramel tastes a little thinner which makes it runnier and gooier. The caramel is not overly sugary as some caramels can be and I think it compliments the whole chocolate Carmel experience.
The second and third bites of the bar are always a lot smaller that the first for me. I do however savour the taste of the last bites and enjoy them just as much as the first, if not more. The creamy chocolate melts away to reveal the luxurious tasting Carmel within and I can't get enough of it.
Conclusion
This little chocolate bar, which is small, compared to most, is worth a lot more than the mere 10 pence that was paid for it. The creamy chocolate combined with the gooey caramel centre work well together and for me better than any other caramel...

So thats where the idea came from...
Review of Play Misty For Me DVD by
milkyboy
Advantages: Being the first of a sub genre, now much copied
Disadvantages: Bit of a slow starter
...Mr. Eastwood broke yet another mould with the production of this movie.
Before it he was the arcetyple hard but fair guy we all want to be ,in control, not averse to bending the rules to acheive the best world for us all.
After it we see that an ordinary can be man driven to the point where the only option is to kill.
The film makes great use of Clints home town of Carmel . A place chosen to show that events can happen even in the most ordinary places. He plays a local radio disc jockey who uses his "fame" to help win over the ladies, little realising that the regular caller asking him to play the song of the title,is becoming obsessed with him.
After a some character building scenes, Mr. E. condescends to have a "relationship" with the caller thinking of it more as a one night stand, than the long term affair she hopes...

Is It Candy or Is It Cake
Review of Recipes for Desserts by
mom2seven
Advantages: Taste Great
Disadvantages: Lots a colories
...My oldest son just loves this cake. It is so simple to make, but so many calories that I really do save it for special occassions. This cake is also one that you will find is better made in the summer than the winter. I am really not sure why that is, but it just seems like that is where it belongs.
Each year on his birthday we must make this for him. It is so much nicer than all that frosting. But, beware, it is very sweet.
A great quality to this cake is that is the melt in your mouth variety. All the chocolate and carmel make it that way.
SNICKER CAKE
1 pkg German Chocolate cake mix(or you can make your own from scratch)
1 12 oz. pkg caramel
1 8 oz. semi-sweet chocolate chips
1/2c. margarine
1/3 c. milk
1 c. walnuts
Make cake according to package directions.(or recipe) Pour one half the batter into a 9x13 pan. Bake...

Scotlands Favourite
Review of Tunnock's Caramel Wafer Biscuits by
pyela1
Advantages: Really filling
Disadvantages: Fat & Sugar Content
...Not a great biscuit eater, I find it strange how I can’t resist the gold and red stripes of a Tunnock’s Carmel Wafer. It has to be the packaging, not the delicious caramel & wafer covered in generous chocolate that makes them a weekly item in my shopping trolley. That's also why the kids can never find them because I’ve hidden them for me only.
The reason I really like them so much is that they are not the type of biscuit that you finish the pack before you realise. They are really tasty and filling. Great for a mid morning energy boost.
Tunnocks Bakery was established in 1890 by Thomas Tunnock, but it wasn’t until the 1950s that the Caramel Wafer as well as other favourites, Snowballs and Teacakes, were made, leading to a boom in business and a steady expansion of the factory.
This is more than just...

Resistance is Futile
Review of Revels by
claire1
Advantages: great choice of centres, good value
Disadvantages: Never enough in a small packet, eat the big packet and you simply feel fat!
...I'm not a huge fan of Mars chocolate so I was surprised by just how much i enjoy these. They are now a firm favourite to accompany any trip to the cinema, video rental, car journey - i think you get the picture! Perfect anytime!
Packaging: Updated fairly recently - now quite modern and very distinctive. Bright orange packet with brown and yellow thick stripes with revels written in large white letters across front. Appealing to eye and very easy to spot in sweet display so no time wasted searching!
Taste: Choice of 6 centres: Peanut, coffee, orange, caramel, malteser or pure chocolate. My favourites are the pure chocolate and maltesers. The orange is good but rather sweet, coffee is never my favourite but still more than edible. The peanut and carmel ones are good also, but not the ones I like to save to last to savour! I guess...
