No wonder it's classed as the world's capital city. When you go to New York, you have to go up the Empire State Building. It has wonderful views - and it is hard to imagine that the building was built over half a century ago! To better the view from the Empire State Building however, try out the World Trade Center - the twin towers situated to the south of Manhattan - because from there you can even see the Empire State Building itself in its full glory. ...New York, New York, there are movies, songs, books named after this city of dreams. It has everything and anything. I went last fall with my family and it was the best week I have ever had in my life, I stayed in the Waldorf Astoria which is one of the most beautiful and elegant hotels you could ever stay in! Dont let people say that " the Plaza is the best hotel in New York becuse it's not its the Waldorf for sure. There is so much to do in New Yorkand the whole place is like one giantfilm set, you have Time Square where I say Fight Club because it is an R and if you are with your parents you can see it your under 17 and I was 14 but in Scotland i'd have to be 18 with or without parental consent, Empire State buliding which was breath taking from the top, statue of libirty which I never got over to see as the que was far to long... ...New York City has to be the most vibrant and energetic city in the world. It has to be visited at least once in your lifetime, but no doubt it'll have you going back for more. First of all, one thing that is undeniable about a trip to New York City, it's going to cost you a packet. No matter how long you go for, or what the purpose of your visit is (unless you're fortunate enough to get the company to pay!) you're going to have to save up. The city is very tourist friendly. I would recommend getting a travel guide on the city and familiarising yourself with a streetmap. Being a new city the streets are planned in a grid pattern, so that at any time you can merely look to see which to streets are intersecting near you and you should know exactly where you are in relation to every sight in the city. ...Bored of spending long University summer holidays stuck at home working as a waitress or barmaid I decided to head off to the Big Apple to find some adventure. And let me tell you, I had the best summer of my life. I found a job in Camp Na Sho Pa, a children's summer camp set in the New York State country side. I spent 9 weeks at camp and boy was it tough, but so rewarding and our days off were filled with adventure. The camp was situated about 2 hours north of New York City. From there we had easy access into Bloomingberg, a middle-sized town which had a great mall with cimema. A 2 hours bus ride took us into the centre of New York City. It was one of the best experiences of my life. New York City is so fantastic that I can't even describe it with words. It's definately an experience in itself. ...Easily my favourite holiday destination, New York has everything the holiday make could want. Culture, history, landmarks and so much more. I was completely overwhelmed by the scale of the city. I spent just over a week in Manhatten and probably only visited 10% of it. Things worth going to see: 1 Empire State- no brainer 2. Chrysler building 3. World Trade Centre 4. Ellis Island/Statue of Liberty 5. The City at night A lot has been made in the media about NYC's reputation as a crime capital. This used to be the case but from what I gather, the mayor of the city has done a lot to clean up the city and at no time did I feel intimidated walking the streets. Go there. ...The Helmsley Park Lane is ideally located - in particular for the first time New York tourist who wants to experience the city's charme. Opposite the hotel lies Central Park and to its right the infamous 5th Avenue with Tiffany's, FAO Schwarz and Saks no more than 5 minutes away. Close to the hotel is also a wealth of good restaurants -the Hard Rock Cafe and the Harley Davidson Cafe, as well as some more unique and fancy establishments on 57th Street. The outside decor of the hotel is disappointing compared to the other places on Central Park South. The hotel lacks the large and luxurious entrance that one may expect to be overwhelmed with by a hotel of its class. The standards rooms are superbly clean (with twice daily maid service). If you are looking for a true 5 star experience, however, you may be a little disappointed... Read review

Advantages: Hey, it's NYC, haven't you heard of it?
Disadvantages: Actually I would not want to live there!

...Franky already knew it, and it will be true forever – New York is a city that doesn’t sleep. It was a hot summer day two years ago, when I first came to New York City. I was coming by car from New Jersey, and still being miles (and a two hours car ride) away, I first saw Manhattans impressing skyline with the Twin Towers literally scraping the sky. Two years later, we all feel that there is something missing in New York’s skyline. But though the World Trade Center is gone, New York is still a great city and one of the most amazing places on earth. NYC didn’t loose its fascination. It is still the pulsating “Big Apple” at Hudson River, home of the New York Stock Exchange, the Nasdaq and the United Nations (headquarter). And it is still worth a journey! ...I stayed in New York for 3 months and during that time I learnt a lot about the truth of the city. Initially I felt very intimidated by it and scared to go out alone. I was female and on my own so what was I to do? I was in the big bad dangerous city wasn't I? As time went on, I grew more confident about travelling on the subway on my own, sometimes at night. I realised that there were many women who did this. New York is not the dangerous place it once was and it has been cleaned up a lot. You get to know which parts are safer than others. For example, I wouldn't go to Harlem, Alphabet City or Times Square on my own at night (especially after the theatre crowds have gone). It is best to stay away from parking lots because of the people who hang around there. My advice is be sure about where you're going, look confident, be alert... Read review
