Making c++ easier
Review of C++ Builder Personal 6 Complete package by  Screm

Advantages: Removes tedious tasks, Implements much windows GUI
Disadvantages: Expensive to buy particular versions (earlier versions are free)

...Borland c++ builder is a very useful tool that provides the user with a very productive and easy to use environment, elliminating many of the errors associated with command line programming. It also implements much of the windows GUI as to make it extremely easy to produce windows programs that make use of dialogues and forms. Although I found the help sections within the program not to be very useful, the layout of the toolbars on screen etc allows for very easy use while develping programs. Used by a variety of businesses and professional developers the compiler at the heart of the software (which can also be downloaded free from the Borland website) is very good in comparison to other c++ compilers. This is definitely a package that can be recommended for beginners - although it is a benefit to have knowledge in another Object... Read review

object orienteering
Review of Information Technology by  oranges76

Advantages: Excellent introduction to programming
Disadvantages: Group work

...I studied M206 (Computing: An Object-Oriented Approach) in 2000 and found it to be an excellent introductory course to Computer programming. This is not to say that it was easy. In fact during the first third of the course I found the learning curve quite steep. However once I had grasped the basic concepts behind Smalltalk (the language used), the course was a lot less demanding. I had to spend about 15 hours a week on average to complete the course. This is typical for a 60 point OU course and if this is the only course that you are doing in a single academic year it shouldn't be too much of a heavy workload. I did get quite behind at some points during the course and managed to catch up with surprising ease, which is encouraging for people who work and/or have hectic lives. Smalltalk is a pure object-oriented language... Read review

M206 - Object Oriented Frogs!
Review of Information Technology by  djhendra

Advantages: well structured, well paced
Disadvantages: rather too many frogs for my liking...

...The Open University's M206 course (level 2) - Computing:An Object-oriented Approach is a superb introduction to the world of objects and object programming. The course uses the Smalltalk language to develop a range of applications and examples, most of which for some bizarre reason seem to contain Frogs (and sometimes Toads and 'HoverFrogs!) in one form or another. Amphibian fetishes aside, the course is very well structured and takes a gentle route into a complex subject which even idiots like me can understand. I was very happy with my Grade 2 pass and M206 gave me an excellent grounding for my next course - M301 Software Systems and their Development - see my review!... Read review

Hemera Photo Objects. Makes your life easier
Review of Hemera Photo-Objects 5,000 Complete package by  Martinscholes

Advantages: Fantastic product
Disadvantages: None

...A was also bedevilled with a rather shoddy catalogue and viewing system. Exhibit B was a little better, but the images were lumped into ridiculously vague categories such as: "Distant" "views" and the like. And as they were all numbered rather than being named, the rather dodgy catalogue was even worse than that of Exhibit A. Say what you like about Exhibit A, at least you knew what pictures were supposed to be about! What of Exhibit C. Sorry! I got carried away there! What about Hemnera Photo Objects 5000? Wow! What about Hemera Photo Shop 5000?! It is easy to install and use is self-explanatory. The photos are shown as clear, easy-to-view thumbnails. They also list up the name of the photograph which tells you what it is. Then there is a description of what the photograph is which is very detailed. Let me give you an example: Chick... My Review of the Olympus Camedia C-460 Zoom
Review of Olympus CAMEDIA C 460ZOOM by  the_enlightened_one

Advantages: Easy to use if I can use it
Disadvantages: No Rechargeable Batteries

...-460 lamp flashes for 10 seconds then 2 seconds later the Olympus C-460 beeps and the picture is taken, it takes some setting up to do when you want to use it but it can be fun trying to sit back down with the time you have. That all I am going to cover in the menu options but there is a lot more you can play with, I could go on for ages. The images The Olympus C-460 takes very good quality images. I did some christening pictures for my friend as they had asked me to be a God parent, and after people had seen the print outs, I was asked to do some family shots and made a bit of money, so that cant be to bad. I find the shutter speed of the camera very good it takes fast moving objects very well (see pictures of dolphins I have taken whilst on my holiday); you can set the quality on the Olympus C-460 to what you want, either low quality... As easy as you could expect it to be
Review of Beginners Guide to C++ - Oleg Yaroshenko by  yhwman

Advantages: Well written
Disadvantages: Some self tests would have been nice

...If you are new to programming then c++ is a hard language to start with, as is Java or any other object oriented language. As to understand the language, you have to understand object oriented principals. Oleg however does a good job of explaining everything with all code highlighted and the results you should get from running the code. One thing he doesn’t provide though are self test questions, so I’d recommend that you use the end of chapter project to practice. Try writing the program before reading through how to do it. Another thing not provided is a c++ compiler itself. However, you can get a good free one from www.djdelorie.com called DJGPP. Overall the book has been useful to me in learning c++ and various programming techniques that can be applied to most languages. Definitely recommended.... Read review

The Orient - far from Oriental in look and service
Review of The Orient Restaurant, Sandbach, Cheshire by  koshkha

Advantages: Great food - eventually
Disadvantages: Over excitable aircon and music was much too lound

...At the end of 2007, scaffolding and tarpaulins went up on an old building I pass on my way to and from work. I was mildly intrigued to know what was going on behind the tarpaulins and when the building re-emerged a couple of months later, I was very pleased to see the rough-looking old building had turned into what appeared to be a sparkly new restaurant by the name of 'The Orient'. Whilst my home is in the Midlands, I now work on the Wirral and during the week, I live in a flat on the outskirts of the small Cheshire town of Sandbach. Sandbach is a pretty little 'olde-worlde' kind of place that suffers for being best known for one of the most infamously awful motorway service stations in the country and is sadly less well known as the site of some 9th Century Saxon crosses. If you find yourself stuck in a jam on the M6, it's worth... Read review

C plus plus programming
Review of Computing by  oranges76

Advantages: Concise and well presented
Disadvantages: Submission and retrieval of assignments by mail

.... Compared to M206 (Computing: an Object-Oriented Approach) the course content is presented in a much more accessible way. By this I mean that the content is presented as a series of booklets (units). There are 4 units per block and each unit takes about 2 weeks to work through totaling roughly 14 - 16 hours worth of study. Each booklet is about the size of a magazine, which makes it particularly amenable to reading on the train on the way to work instead of said magazine. There is also a ‘handbook’, which neatly summarises each unit into its main points. I am finding this especially useful when it comes to revision. C++ is a huge language and this course goes a fair way to introduce the basics. It also provides an excellent grounding from which to move on and learn on your own. There are no associated TV programmes... Read review
