Reviews of object-oriented programming with java
Java
Review of Java by
DrPc
Advantages: General purpose programming langage, Object-oriented, Multi-threaded and portable
Disadvantages: not suitable for all tasks, and java applications are little bit slow
...I have been a programmer since i was 15 years old and i haven't seen such a powerfull langauge as JAVA. I programmed in many different langauges like V.Basic, C and C++ and i concluded that JAVA is the best language especially for networking perpuses.
JAVA was originally designed by James Gosling in 1990. It started life as a new Programming language for Consumer Electroics, i.e intelligent refrigerators, toasters, TV's etc. From the start it was designed to be simple, bug free, network capable programming language, that could be written like C++, and like C++ it was OBJECT ORIENTED.
JAVA language can be defined as: A platform-independent, object-oriented, multi-threading, dynamically linked programming language.
here is a brief description of these nice features:
1) Platform-independent:
The source code can be written in any...

object orienteering
Review of Information Technology by
oranges76
Advantages: Excellent introduction to programming
Disadvantages: Group work
...I studied M206 (Computing: An Object-Oriented Approach) in 2000 and found it to be an excellent introductory course to Computer programming. This is not to say that it was easy. In fact during the first third of the course I found the learning curve quite steep. However once I had grasped the basic concepts behind Smalltalk (the language used), the course was a lot less demanding. I had to spend about 15 hours a week on average to complete the course. This is typical for a 60 point OU course and if this is the only course that you are doing in a single academic year it shouldn't be too much of a heavy workload. I did get quite behind at some points during the course and managed to catch up with surprising ease, which is encouraging for people who work and/or have hectic lives.
Smalltalk is a pure object-oriented language...

My journey through the land of Java
Review of Sun Certified Programmer (SCP) certification by
triton1
Advantages: Everything is covered
Disadvantages: expensive
...This will be a long and thorough review of the certification given by Sun, the makers of the Java programming language – because a) I am currently taking a course for it and b) I have not taken the exam yet.
***************
What is Java?
***************
Please excuse the technicality in the following answer to the above question, as it was provided by the co-founder of Sun, Bill Joy, who said:
“Java is a small, simple, safe, object-oriented, interpreted or dynamically optimized, byte-coded, architecture-neutral, garbage-collected, multi-threaded programming language with a strongly typed exception-handling mechanism for writing distributed, dynamically extensible programs.”
Yes, you are right if you are sitting there and scratching your head, so I will attempt to briefly explain Java.
Java is a high-level programming language...

M206 - Object Oriented Frogs!
Review of Information Technology by
djhendra
Advantages: well structured, well paced
Disadvantages: rather too many frogs for my liking...
...The Open University's M206 course (level 2) - Computing:An Object-oriented Approach is a superb introduction to the world of objects and object programming.
The course uses the Smalltalk language to develop a range of applications and examples, most of which for some bizarre reason seem to contain Frogs (and sometimes Toads and 'HoverFrogs!) in one form or another.
Amphibian fetishes aside, the course is very well structured and takes a gentle route into a complex subject which even idiots like me can understand. I was very happy with my Grade 2 pass and M206 gave me an excellent grounding for my next course - M301 Software Systems and their Development - see my review!...

Excellent protable language
Review of Java by
friends
Advantages: protable
Disadvantages: bulky
...Java programming language was developed by Sun Microsystem and has become the Internet Programming language due to its protability. The main strength of Java is that application only has to be written once, compile once and then it can be run in any environment without further work, as long as a Java virtual machine for the environment exist. However, there is some limitation for this as a terminal based system will not be able to run a Java program with awt toolkit as that is beyond the system capability. There is also a great set of tools for Java. As the JAva and internet technology growth, the use of Java has covered every single corner of the world - from smart card to set top box to a security system in the car (in the future).
With increasing processing computing power, the bulkyness of Java has also become less of a problem...

Java in a Nutshell
Review of Java in a Nutshell A Desktop Quick Reference by Flanagan, David by
andy-T
Advantages: Useful introduction + reference
Disadvantages: Lacks examples
...I wonder if they mean nut-shell or nuts-hell? Either way, here's the first of a series of three books covering Java 2 1.2 and 1.3 in a very short number of pages. The book starts with chapters explaining the concepts in brief (with very few examples) and then the majority of the book is a reference guide to the libraries.
Contents are an introduction to the syntax, the platform and Java OO perculiarities, security and beans. Be under no mistake, this book is an introduction to Java, not an introduction to programming, it is aimed at people who want to grasp the theories quickly (as the titles suggest). 236 pages of Java introduction, 347 pages of reference, £18.95 from BOL.
To get the most out of it, you may need Java Examples in a Nutshell, by the same author, I think this may be out of print now though. Luckily though, those kind...

Overview of the Java technologies that enrich the core Java language
Review of Java by
SimonH
Advantages: Platform Independent, Ideal for Internet/Web development, Free Development Environment, Rich in functionality, Difficult to accidentaly crash your system (Robust exception management and memory management).
Disadvantages: Slower than some lower level languages such as C++.
...This article will raise your awareness of the Java technologies that enrich the core Java language so that you know what everybody is on about when they talk about 'Java'. The Java technolgies examined are:
Java Virtual Machine (JVM)
Applet
Java Plug-in
Java Database Connectivity (JDBC)
Servlets
Java Server Pages (JSP)
Java Beans
Enterprise Java Beans (EJB)
Enterprise Java Applications
JAVA VIRTUAL MACHINE (JVM)
What is the Java Virtual Machine (JVM)?
Code written in the Java programming language is platform independent and compiled in to a Java class. When you use this class as an application, the Java class is interpreted by the Java Virtual machine so that it will perform the same action (e.g. display a window on the screen in Windows 98 Operating System, or on a SUN UNIX operating system). This is achieved by the Java class knowing...

Review of Microsoft Visual J++ 6.0 Complete package by
iainhendry
Advantages: its java
Disadvantages: clumsy ,seems over complex for beginners , opportunity wasted
...The theory behind this program is good , Visual Basic and Visual C++ are by far the best programming tools there is thats what makes this product strange. In my opinion the Java language doesnt need a product as complex as this , what you need is a text editor , a compiler and an interpreter. An example of stupid design in this program is when I start up I am greeted with options on which type of Java application/applet I want to develop , great but then when you finish this step you are presented with numerous toolbars and a gap in the screen in the middle so you can see your desktop and no file to start entering code into , I mean come on Java is supposed to be easy so I would imagine a beginner would like to start coding relatively quickly. Another belter is the default java file you start with contains a mass of code before you start...

Fantastic
Review of Java by
ia_young
Advantages:
Disadvantages:
...Although I have only just started to program with Java and I do not know every thing about it I can see already how good it is! With it you have the ability to create simple Java Applets to run through web browsers to enhance a web site to make it more popular to creating a client server database interface over a network. It has all the functions to do what ever you want it to, and the ability to make it look good. The download from the Sun web site of it was easy and the installation of this was easy too....

C plus plus programming
Review of Computing by
oranges76
Advantages: Concise and well presented
Disadvantages: Submission and retrieval of assignments by mail
...I am currently studying the Open University course MT262 (Putting Computer Systems to Work) for the 2001 academic year. This is a Level 2 OU course, is worth 30 points and this year costs £235.
For those readers who don't know, an Open University degree can be achieved with 360 points and have no entry requirements which means that 'A' levels are not required. This does mean however that all potential applicants should be aware of the likely intellectual demands made on them. This is no easy route to a degree by any means.
The course itself is divided into 4 blocks, which starts with basic installation of course software then moves on to introducing the higher-level programming language called C++. The course comes with Borland C++ Builder which is the integrated development environment (IDE) for 'building' C++ applications...
