The Streets are lined with gold
Review of These Streets - Paolo Nutini by
mussonanna
Advantages: Amazing new talent
Disadvantages: none
...You may have heard the single currently in the charts ' Last request.' This is the song that alerted me to Paolo Nutini.
Once in a while you hear something truly wonderful, that really makes you stop and listen. Paolo Nutini's debut album is that something, a rare album where you dont find yourself skipping tracks. Desperate to hear more from this amazing new talent, I really think that the he will prove himself to be something great.
Paolo Nutini is an 18 year old singer/songwriter from Paisley, tipped as one of Scotland's hottest talents, the album These Streets is a gem.
Paolo has an Italian father, hense the name and the looks and a Glaswegian Mum, which explains the accent you can pick up in his songs. His influences are David Bowie, Damien Rice, Oasis, Beatles, U2, Pink Floyd and Fleetwood Mac, which should give you...

Streets Ahead!
Review of These Streets - Paolo Nutini by
clarebear21
Advantages: Something for every mood
Disadvantages: none i can think of
...I was bought this album recently for my birthday and have played it everyday since!
The first Paolo Nutini song I heard was Last Request and I loved it, I imagined the singer being a middle aged man from Italy (due to the name) He is actually a 20 year old from Scotland-although his father is Italian.
He has no musical training and his big break came at a David Sneddon concert in his home town. David was delayed and Paolo was the winner of an impromptu pop quiz, the prize being a chance to perform while the crowd waited. As he was so popular with the crowd, a member of the audience offered to become his manager (I presume they were already in the business and not some random person!) The rest is history as they say.
This album is Paolo Nutinis first and Im certain it won't be his last. The cover is quite distinctive with its white...

Pier Paolo Pasolini, that's the man!
Review of The Decameron DVD by
sottovoce82
Advantages: Some great artworks...
Disadvantages: ... become disturbing when you think of them too much
...deaths of a large number of people as a result of the Black Death, the one hundred novellas tackle different issues and range from the light-hearted to the tragic. Among the topics are satirizing the hypocrisy of priests and nuns, and erotic tales that include forbidden relations, deception and cuckoldry. I read this book about three years ago and what amazed me most about it was how widespread its stories are; you will notice that you already know some of the stories from somewhere even before you hear of a book called The Decameron. That is due to the fact that many famous writers borrowed stories from this book, and these stories themselves were in turn borrowed from various sources.

Pier Paolo Pasolini, Again and Again!
Review of The Canterbury Tales DVD by
sottovoce82
Advantages: "Between a jest and a joke…
Disadvantages: … many a truth can be told."
...of Death, Salo, which is extremely pessimistic, perhaps with the exception of the last conversation in it. Having finished my reviews of The Trilogy of Life and Salo, I cannot but express that I would have loved to know which other two books Pasolini had in mind to complete his nightmarish trilogy. So, if you know, please tell me:)

Pier Paolo Pasolini (1922 –1975) was an Italian poet, novelist, playwright, journalist, linguist, film director, philosopher and actor. The director’s biography section on this DVD sheds more light on the artist’s turbulent life and mysterious death. Among his most famous films in addition to Il Decameron are Arabian Nights and The Canterbury Tales. His most controversial film remains to be Salò which is based on Marquis de Sade’s The 120 Days of Sodom...

Pasolini does not appear as an actor in Arabian Nights, and yes, if you watch The Decameron and Canterbury Tales before watching this film, you will miss his presence.
Most actors in this film are amateurs, like the lead...

Venturing outside the walls
Review of S. Paolo fuori le Mura by
womble
Advantages: interesting more modern-styled church, less tourists so it feels a little more 'discovered'
Disadvantages: not in the central area of Rome, a bit underwhelming after St Peters and San Giovanni
...St Paolo fuori le Mura, means literally, St Pauls outside the walls, the walls in question being the city walls of Rome. That might imply it is a bit out of the way, and to be honest, it probably doesn't feature on the standard 'doing Rome in a long weekend' itinerary, but there is a handy Metro stop nearby, and it is one of the four 'basilicas' in Rome, much visited by pilgrims.
My guidebook told me it would be the least impressive of the four, but I quite liked it. Probably because it was the least busy, and the most awkward to get to (although it is by no means hard to find.. the handy metro stop in question, being called 'St Paolo'!)
It is certainly the least old of the Basilicas, at least in its present form, having been built in the 18th/19th century after a fire in the previous church.
The courtyard which you enter...
