A Passage To India
Review of A Passage To India - E.M. Forster by
beckymilar_4
Advantages: It got me an A in Higher English
Disadvantages: I spent a year reviewing it!
...“A Passage to India” by E.M Forster, is a novel set at the end of the British Raj over India. Set in the fictional city of Chandrapore, Forster clearly explores the problems with the British bureaucracy ruling a country they knew very little about. Despite being based on the poem “A Passage to India” by Walt Whitman, Forster contrasts every theory explored in this poem. While the Suez Canal was an act of blending two cultures together Forster depicts the lack of connection between the two races. As a result prejudice and interaction between the East and West become prevailing themes.
Adela Quested has come to India to meet her possible future husband, Ronny Heaslop – who is the city magistrate of this fictional city. Mrs Moore too has accompanied her, being Ronny’s mother. When they arrive they are ardent to see the “real” India...

Union of Cultures
Review of General: India by
amazon1984
Advantages: rich cultural heritage.friendly people
Disadvantages: u need to carry your emergency needs with you.
...hey guys the first step to know india is just try to get visa
Then the thing which you will experience ,will be unforgottable.
there are lots of things which you will experience over here, not in another part of world. There is a rich cultural heritage like monuments in the area of delhi, jaipur ,agra famous worldwide for "TAJ"
hyderabaad, kolkata.etc over these places you can discover the main india. The most unique thing about India is that its one part is completely different from other like different climatic conditions, language, culture, festivals.
There are thousands of festivals being celebrated over here. The famous are Diwali,Holi,Onam,Pongal,Ied.And inspite of modernisation Indians have shown great determination for preserving their moral values and cultural heritage.
People are very friendly, the basic travel can be done...

Sexual Tension… Whew [film only]
Review of A Passage To India DVD by
sottovoce82
Advantages: Intriguing, great acting, stunning scenery
Disadvantages: If you don't like drama films, you might find it too long
...A Passage to India [1984]
.
.
.
In the film which is an almost faithful adaptation of E. M. Forster's novel A PASSAGE TO INDIA (1924), Adela Quested (Judy Davis) and Mrs. Moore (Peggy Ashcroft) travel to India to visit the latter's son Ronny (Nigel Havers), who is also Miss Quested's fiancé. Ronny works there as a civil magistrate who is surrounded by other English employees, and these prefer to stay secluded in a milieu which they created to look like home. However, this is not what the two women had in mind; they visited the country with the expectation of seeing the real India. They manage to do so, but this experience ends as a rather tragic one for both. They get the chance to meet Dr. Aziz who seems to have a revolutionary spirit that is not satisfied with how the English treat his fellow countrymen. When he talks to these two...

Great Value
Review of Air India - AIC by
Manics
Advantages: Great value
Disadvantages: Long queues when checking in
...I have just come back from a holiday in New York and I travelled with Air India as they were the cheapest I could find (on the website www.241.com). Despite the cheap prices, the service from the crew was what you would expect - friendly and helpful.
The food on the flight was very good especially for curry lovers but if you don't like curry then there are alternative meals. In-flight entertainment mainly consisted of India films and programs with English subtitles. I did not enjoy this but I tend to sleep on long flights anyway so it didn't matter to me.
I do have one major gripe about Air India and that is the long queues when checking in. Flying from Heathrow wasn't too bad but on the return journey I had to queue up for 2 hrs before I managed to check in!
I would certainly travel with Air India and I can't see any reason to pay...

Should British Indians support England ?
Review of India by
kaps247
Advantages: None
Disadvantages: None
...Should British Indians support England ?
The answer to this is obviously more complex than yes or no !
On the face of it it seems like there is a double standard. Take football, when England score they celebrate no end. But where cricket is concerned it is a different story. A matter of roots over reality.
When Sachin Tendulkar smashes a century against England its greeted with enjoyment all over the world and the british indian is no different - no regrets that England has been beaten.
Since the beating of Austraila in India in 2001, India's cricket is in a renaissance and when India tour england the feelings displayed by the British Indian is something cricket has never witnessed. But why the support for India over England ?
Broadly speaking the British Indian does not get the chance to do what they most want to do - support India...

India's Performance in Sharjah
Review of India by
pankajmalik
Advantages: Inclusion of new Players like Yuvraj and Zahir in the team.
Disadvantages: Lack of an allrounder like Adam Gilchrist of Aus and Kallis of SA
...The Headlines on Monday Morning in all Leading Newspapers:
India's dismal performance shows it all....
Well India no doubt played well in Nairobi in the ICC knockout trophy. But they went down to NewZealand in the finals. We cant say that India is still a side having players involved in match fixing. The reason is that India didnt perform well on that particular day.In the same way when they were in Sharjah playing against Srilanka and Zimbabwe,we cant say that they played badly, they did perform but not to their mark, and so we went down in the final to Srilanka by a very big margin and this has constituted the lowest ever Indian total.Well some of our friends say that India presently undergoing problems like match fixing is still under the pressure of this "Fixing" stuff. But the present team has a lot of new players like Zahir Khan...

Advice on arriving in India
Review of Delhi, India (DEL) by
cyrano
Advantages: Relatively efficient and modern
Disadvantages:
...If you are flying to India, chances are you will be arriving in Delhi, and if you are flying a European or Middle Eastern Airline, that means arriving in the early hours of the morning.
Arriving in a strange country for the first time can be a daunting experience. Delhi's International Arrivals Terminal is relatively modern and efficient. Make sure you fill out the Immigration forms and choose the right que at the immigration counter. You'll find the staff relatively pleasant and helpful, though not very talkative. DO NOT, under any circumstance, be rude to an Immigration official, as this is a criminal offence under Indian law.
On picking up your baggage and exiting through customs, hand in your customs declaration form. Immediately on your right you'll find a State Bank of India which does a good rate for foreign currency...

the edge of perception
Review of The Piano Tuner - Daniel Mason by
ali3986
Advantages: different, complex, multi-dimensional characters
Disadvantages: slow moving at times
...spirituality and questions himself and who he is. The portrayal of his character; general questioning and themes reminded me considerably of E.M Forster's characters in a Passage to India and the underlying tones are also similar. This is the kind of book where the excitement hapens between the lines it is not spelt out for the reader. The effect of this is that there is a lot of room for interpretation and this adds a depth to the novel that is not found in many new novels.
This is not the kind of book that you cannot put down, it took me about 3 months to read and i must have read about 12 books in between! The reason for this is because not that much happens and there is little suspense until the end. It is slow going but i enjoyed it none the less. I think one needs to read such a book slowly because it requires the reader to think about...

Cloudrock - A Real Page Turner
Review of Cloudrock - Garry Kilworth by
Maximus-Qualitus
Advantages: Great Read
Disadvantages: None
..., because of the love of his slightly older brother he is spared and is now his brothers 'Shadow', following him around, eating scraps of food and wearing cast off rags.
His life always hanging in the balance for if someone should acknowledge his existence, it would mean a swift and certain death.
I won't go into the story anymore but it does involve things such as incestuous marriages, cannibalism, secret people catching the babies that are cast into the abyss, the night people, secret passages to the ground miles below, earthquakes, poisoness gases etc.........
In parts the book reminded me of the caste of people in India called the 'Untouchables' of whom no one acknowledges, only in this book it's taken to its extreme.
You do get a real sense of terror that 'shadow' feels when anyone looks or moves in his direction.
Cast.
