...Oh yes - a movie with Patrick at his best, Jennifer Grey wasn't bad either ! An oldy fashioned kind of a movie set in the Butlins kind of holiday camp environment. The story is basically that Doctor's daughter meets travelling entertainer and falls in love. He is moody, sexy and has the most excellent moves, she is young, naive and totally out of her depth. They get together when his dance partner for the show is unable to make it and he has to teach Jennifer (baby) how to dance. There is a lot of touchie feelie in this movie and although I have seen it sooooo many times I could easily put it on tomorrow. The music is excellent and there are some great supporting roles. Both Patrick and Jennifer excel themselves ! If you like a good story and Patrick then you have to watch this movie...... Read review

Advantages: A very good read, gives an insight into a sailors life at sea in the 1800's.
Disadvantages: This series of books is a little expensive

The story is set in the year 1800 and follows the story of recently promoted Captain Jack Aubery RN and his new acquintance Stephen Maturin. Captain Aubery takes command of the 'Sophie' and persuades his new friend - Stephen Maturin - to join as the new ships surgeon. Jack Aubery proves to be an able captain both in seamanship and in battle. We are told of gripping accounts of his battles - most especially against the Cacafuego where Capt. Aubaery gains the reputation of becoming Luck Jack Aubery. Stephen Maturin gains a reputation of a most learned surgeon, and in later books uses this to disguise his real brilliance as an intelligence officer causing mahem against the Napoleonic movement. Advantages: Very atmospheric
Disadvantages: No disadvantages to a book, surely?!

...I think a lot of people will agree that this seems to have been a very popular book. Considering Patrick Suskind hasn't written very much yet people have really embraced "Perfume" as the thoroughly original and unusual read that it is. Set in eighteenth century France we follow the life of Suskind's fictional character Jean-Baptiste Grenouille. As Grenouille's character grows we become aware of his superlative sense of smell. His world seems to be utterly dominated by smell. So sensitive are his olfactory capabilities that he is disgusted by so many crudely manufactured scents worn by the rich French aristocracy. The catalyst for his maddening disgust of the smells that surround him comes when one day he smells the scent of pure unadulterated beauty. It comes in the form of an adolescent girl and, such is his hunger for this rich... Read review

...A combination of Smokey and the Bandit and Sam Peckinpah's Convoy, Black Dog goes through its mechanical paces with very little pep. The material is trite, as are the story and characterisations. The director doesn't bring much to the party; he's been handed leftovers and he deals with them with tired, uninspired professionalism. It's also a shame to see the agile Patrick Swayze relegating back to his self-serious 'glum' mode again. In 1989, he gave an inventive, ingratiating, macho-mockery performance in the slightly underappreciated Road House. Here, he takes his cardboard role way too seriously to make an appealing hero, so all we're stuck with are okay chase scenes and bullets flying from byzantine directions. ...Dirty dancing is a fantastic film, very watchable. Too watchable probably as I myself have watched too many times but never noticed until recently what someone pointed out to me. This is the funny part where Patrick Swayze jumps out of the bed after him and Baby have spent the night together ( think it may be for the first time) and pulls on his tight leather trousers! Watch his face for the point wear he grimaces as he catches a part of his body in the zip! Quite amusing! Obviously other parts of this romance are woth watching. Basically its about a innocent young girl ( the "Baby" of the family) who goes on holiday with her family and falls for the bad-boy dancer when she becomes his partner for one night to help out. Advantages: Lowe, Swayze and good action
Disadvantages: Predictable sports storyline

...himself on the wrong side of the team's coach, when he is caught romancing his daughter and is unfairly dumped on the bench. After he sees his friend and mentor Derek (Patrick Swayze) seriously injured by an opposing player, Youngblood looses his nerve and flees back to the farm. Where he is given a stern talking too by his brother and given a lesson in toughening up by his father, before he is sent back to the hockey team to try and make things right. More often than not, sports movies follow the same predictable storyline that the lead role tries to make good, comes up against a seemingly unmovable opponent, feels that they're doomed never to win and then comes back to beat the opposition and be the hero of the piece. ...North and South has been a favourite show of mine since it was on ITV in the late 1980's. I recently picked up a copy on DVD at a bargain price, so was happily reminded of how much I'd enjoyed it.
