Advantages: Strong performances by a talented cast
Disadvantages: A bit more gratuitous violence than you'd want young children to witness

...Note: Some plot details are disclosed in this opinion. Based on the novel by Sir Walter Scott, Rob Roy is the kind of movie that you just almost have to like. With a script that is largely unmarred by shades of moral gray, good is clearly good, evil is clearly evil, marital love and fidelity triumph over all challenges, and justice prevails at the end of the day. It is, in a word, wholesome. Toss in a healthy dose of standing stones, Highland lochs, and good Scottish scenery in general, and--well, you just about have to like this movie. At least, Himself and I do. We own a VHS copy, and when we crave escape to the Highlands or exposure to political and personal honor (try to find either these days), we pull out Rob Roy for uplifting dose of courage and valor--plus a wee bit or romance. Advantages: Good fights
Disadvantages: Why get an Irishman to play a Scot?

...Not bad for another summer blockbuster, this one actually has a good (if inaccurate) story. It is the film of the legend of Rob Roy MacGregor who tricked into debt by a Scottish laird sought to settle the score. Filled to the brim with period duels and honour, along with some very over the top hats this is an entertaining adventure film with a respectable story. Tim Roth and John Hurt play the villains, and as I mention a lot, British actors play the best villains (I don’t recall either of them in a bad film). The fact that (predictably) the hero walks off with wife and kids at the end, when the real Rob Roy was hung drawn and quartered let the film down for me, and I felt used Scottish History to cash in. But don’t let that put you off a good film, with some outstanding performances.... Read review

...FILM REVIEW ONLY ~~~~~~~~~ ~ ~ Rob Roy MacGregor is a legendary figure in Scottish history, immortalised forever in the famous novel of the same name by Sir Walter Scott published in 1817. Scott's novel is probably the main reason he's a legendary figure in Scottish history, as in reality he was a simply a clan chief from around Stirling, (the old Scot's capital) who supported the cause of the Stuarts (Jacobites) in the 1715 rising against the Crown, and who had a penchant for cattle rustling and general mischief making. ~ ~ Mind you, viewing the 1995 movie "Rob Roy" by Scots director Michael Caton-Jones, with the brilliant Irish actor Liam Neeson in the title role, you'd be forgiven for thinking that Rob Roy MacGregor was a major historical figure. Advantages: a great historical romp

...The problem with making a historical tale into a film is that it is always going to be a compromise. What makes a good tale is not often what makes a good film and vica versa. It is easy to take the main subject and polarise it so that the characters are either good or bad, heroes or villians and history portrayed in terms that are too clear cut. Films such as Braveheart and The Patriot were guilty of this only American Civil War saga Glory managed to lay out some balance in its undertaking. Rob Roy would always be a difficult subject to make into a balanced film. In an age when alleigence and politics was the road to success, the historical Rob Roy MacGregor was an enigmatic player of this game and changed his camps as it suited his own ends. But the historical reality does not make for a hero, which is a shame as a realistic portrayal... Read review

...As like all my other reviews I like to say something before I begin. Roy Keane has just come back to the Irish national side after two years in exile thanks to Mick McCarthy in my opinion a man who couldn’t organise piss up in a brewery. The new Irish manager Brian Kerr well done to you. Roy was and still is criticised by a few idiots who say thinks like "You traitor" "You walked out on us" Just for the record Roy was sent home by Mick McCarthy for airing his views on him. I have read this book five times in two years and I have to say I love it. The book begins giving us all the information on the Keane family and how in the 1970's an 80's people frowned upon the foreign games in Ireland such as his and my beloved football. ...roy jones is a terrific counter puncher, regerded as the best fighter in our generation. roy jones juniour is the most talented fighter to enter the ring. if you make a mistake then your in real trouble. he punches as quick as a featherweight however with the power of a heavy weight. he showed us what damage he can do when he won the heavyweight title. the sad part was because of yoyo dieting roy wasnt at his best when he faced antonio tarver. roy jones juniour to some peoples eyes is the most overated person in the sport of boxing, however i could strongly defend that. if you see him beat bernard hopkins you will really see how great he is, bernard hopkins is now the light heavy champ. the dvd is great with stunning punches that can make an elephant cry. the soundtrack of this is very standard. however that doesnt ruin the dvd... ...had heard, the way it is sung leaving the listener in no doubt of what is to come. He's right. Spine tinglingly good, One of the very best. Live, Unbelievable. 20. Breaking Up Is Breaking My Heart They missed a trick, It's Over should have been the last track, what better way to end it than the big O lamenting "It's Over" as hard as his lungs would let him. But this is a welcome inclusion, the title and lyrics conceal what is a really good up tempo zinger of a tune. This is as good a collection of Roy Orbison's songs as I have seen available. The live material was an excellent and very enlightening addition. You will not believe how good this man was live until you hear it, Flawless. I got my copy of it as part of a 3 for 2 offer in HMV, which was magnificent value, I robbed them. I think the RRP is around £16 though it may... Read review
