Banrock Station Sparkling Shiraz
Review of Banrock Station Sparkling Shiraz by steve1105

Advantages: Nice bottle Easy to open
Disadvantages: No foil on top

...I just love wines from Austrailia!!This sparkling wine is fantastic. It has a crimson red color that makes the fruity taste even more understated as a shiraz. I do recomend serving it chilled, as is recomended on the label. Don't be afraid to serve a red wine chilled! There is a few other red wines that are great chilled, but this is the first from Austrailia that passes the test. I recomend that you serve this as you would a champagne, in a flluted glass! Some people do not enjoy or believe in a red wine chilled and to those persons I say TRY IT!!What have you got to lose? Banrock Station is the next Best Austrailian wine and I would recomend it to all of my friends and family members. I will mention it to all of the resaraunts that I freguent!!!!... Read review

Lindemans Lacking
Review of Lindemans Shiraz by Pelenya

Advantages: Fruity, pleasant taste
Disadvantages: Lacks body, has watery consistency

...I love hearty red wines. One of my favorite varieties is a good Shiraz. Trying out new brands of Shiraz is adventurous, as some are absolutely heavenly. Others don't quite measure up. On my way home from work this evening, I stopped by the local supermarket and picked up a bottle of Lindemans Shiraz. It was in the medium price range, along with two of my favorites: McGuigans and Rosemount Estates. Tonight, Lindemans was on offer at $1 off (making it $9.99 per bottle vs $10.99). I was anxious to get home, relax, and give it a try. I must say that I have been disappointed. In comparison with some of my favorite brands of Shiraz, Lindemans seems a bit "watery." Although it has that wonderful fruity taste, it lacks the body of some of its similarly-priced competitors. Lindemans is produced in South Eastern Australia. According... Read review

A red wine with a nice bit of white
Review of Penny Farthing Old Vine Shiraz Viognier by zallin

Advantages: Value, exotic perfume, lively
Disadvantages: 14.5% alc !

...Loads of us Brits love Australian wine for the loveable, forward, brash fruit nature it has brought to our national palate. Combined with easy to understand, clear labelling then it is no wonder that Aussie wine has claimed a large proportion of market share in the UK. However there are times when the Old World can teach its more modern and forward-looking New World cousins a thing or two. A wine I picked up in Tesco recently really helps to illustrate this point. Berton Vineyards Penny Farthing Old Vines Shiraz/Viognier is actually made from a combination of a red wine (Shiraz) with a white wine (Viognier) ! This may sound bizarre but French winemakers in the Cote Rotie (literally ‘Roasted Slope’) area of the Northern Rhone Valley sometimes add a little Viognier (usually around 5% or so) to their Syrah A.K.A Shiraz, to soften the body... A very good, everyday big brand Aussie !
Review of Jacobs Creek - Shiraz Cabernet 2003 by zallin

Advantages: Widely available, very good value for money, moreish
Disadvantages: Slight alcohol burn from high 14% alcohol level

...Jacob’s Creek is a very well known big brand of Australian wine and a big seller in the UK’s supermarkets. I decided to see what all the fuss was about and purchased a bottle of Jacob’s Creek Shiraz Cabernet, vintage 2004, from a local supermarket for £4 (full price was £5) to sup at leisure. It is a classic Australian blend of two red grapes, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, which works very well as the fleshy fruitiness of the Shiraz compliments the tannins and acidity provided by Cabernet Sauvignon to give a nicely balanced and structured wine. The wine itself had a simple and direct classic white label and by modern Australian standards was unusual as it was sealed by a cork rather than a screwcap (one for lovers of classic wine closures !). I wonder if the 2005 vintage has converted to screwcap ? Swirling the wine around... Read review

A Red Wine for the evening
Review of McWilliams Hanwood Estate Shiraz by hammd1974

Advantages: Fruity and smooth
Disadvantages: Can't think of one

...My parents introduced me to this wonderfully smooth Shiraz. I have never really liked drinking red wine before, but this particular Shiraz is very smooth and quaffable. This Shiraz has been described as "plum flavours of the shiraz grape, adding subtle vanilla overtones". Personally, I can't detect the "vanilla overtones" that has been described but I'm not a world expert in wine tasting, I just know what I like. The fruity taste I'm definitely aware of, which is incredibly flavoursome. It has a lovely deep red colour which is certainly not cloudy and has a lovely plumy scent to it. This particular bottle is produce by the McWilliams Hanwood Estate in South Eastern Australia and is sold at Tesco for £6.99 a bottle or £36.99 for a case. I have done an extensive search of the internet and the only hits I have located are all Tesco based... Read review

Kumala Shiraz
Review of Kumala Cabernet Shiraz by mc2204

Advantages: Always well priced, wonderful falvour
Disadvantages: None

...My husband and I drink this wine regularly and will buy as many as the wine rack will take if it is on special offer. At dinner parties friends will often ask for the name of the wine they are being served. I am not one for cheep wine but at the same time I don't really want to pay £20 for a wine I am serving at a dinner party where several bottles will be consumed during the course of the evening. This wine has a delightful fruity flavour and leaves a really smooth feel in the mouth. As with most red wines this is best with red meat dishes. I actually even enjoy it on it's own. I don't need a meal served with it. If you like red wine you really must try this one. It is very reasonably priced. I have tried some expensive wines and this one is very good considering you can normally get it for about five pounds. When having a dinner... Read review

A Reliable and Consistant Wine
Review of Oxford Landing Cabernet Shiraz by ashford

Advantages: Goes well with Red Meat Dishes. Easily Found.
Disadvantages: Not Many

...Oxford Landing Cabernet Shiraz is produced by the Yalumba Wine Company at their vineyards alongside the famous Murray River. Here the soil is rich, the skies blue and the air clean and unpolluted whilst Yalumba is undeniably in the forefront of premium wine production in Australia. It is Australia's oldest family-owned winery having been established back in 1849 by Samuel Smith from Dorset,England. It has huge plantings of Shiraz, and Chardonnay,Cabernet, and Sauvignon Blanc.Today this group embraces some of the best known of Australian wines on the international market. The Shiraz from Oxford Landing is widely available and I believe most of the larger supermarkets stock it as well as major off licences. This wine is vibrant, deep, crimson in colour whilst red berry and mint aromas on the nose are complexed with toasted vanilla and oak... Read review

Blockbuster of a wine.
Review of Rosemount Estates Australian Shiraz by Pihuan

Advantages: Hefty shiraz.
Disadvantages: Perhaps a bit too hefty.

...I have decided to review this wine as Pelenya’s review is now 3 years old and refers to a different vintage; the one that I am reviewing is the 2002. Rosemount wines are now the largest wine producing company in Australia, since the Oakey family firm merged with Southcorp in 2001. They are a global player in the wine market, with a strong presence in the US and here, where they tend to have pole position in almost every wine retail outlet (eye level, end of row). Their Shiraz varietal is a best seller in the US, and very popular here too. It usually costs around £7.50 in Tesco, Sainsbury’s etc, but can often be found on special offer. Rosemount wines often participate in such offers. I bought this at Tesco, for about £6 in an offer giving 20% off all Aussie wines. Shiraz is the most widely planted red grape variety in Australia... My favourite tipple with fizz.
Review of Banrock Station Sparkling Shiraz by Rob099

Advantages: Frothy, tasty, novelty value, gets you drunk quickly
Disadvantages: Gets you drunk quickly, possibly overpriced

...I like most Australian red wine - I'm not a wine expert and don't go in for all that silly sniffing mouth swilling and slurping. I also don't believe that wine should only be drunk with matching food - a nice wine is a nice wine - this one is surprisingly refreshing as well as being a typical full bodied shiraz - its a good Sunday lunch wine or barbeque wine or just for relaxing watching a good movie. You just know when you like something! If you like a nice rich red then this is for you and you get the novelty value of a champagne like pop when you open it and a pink frothy head when you pour it into a glass. Once the head dissipates, the wine doesn't look fizzy - (like champagne where the bubbles go on for ages) but there is still a nice fizz when you drink it. The alcohol content is about 10% I think - haven't had... Read review

Thunderous Aussie shiraz power
Review of Marks & Spencer Barossa Shiraz by zallin

Advantages: Hugely polished, svelte, warms you up on a cold evening
Disadvantages: Could be a bit OTT in flavour for some

...Australian reds wines often have the reputation of being flavoursome and muscular on the palate and on the whole I would say that this is true. If this is indeed your style of wine and you like to take this kind of experience to extremes then you do worse than investing your time in drinking an Aussie classic from Marks and Spencer. This is particular beast is M&S's Barossa Valley Shiraz available at £7.99 a bottle (sometimes it is on offer too) and is made for M&S by the winemakers, St Hallett, who have been known to produce some monster Shiraz in their time. The Barossa in South Australia, near Adelaide, is a premium region for the production of massively flavoured red wines made from the Shiraz grape and this wine encapsulates this perfectly. However, if you find intensely flavoured and full bodied reds a bit too much for drinking... Read review
