An Excellent Story about the First World War
Review of All Quiet on the Western Front - Erich Maria Remarque by
emma155
Advantages: Informs us about the effects of war
Disadvantages: none!
...All Quiet on the Western Front was written by Erich Maria Remarque.
I read this story for my A Level German Coursework, alongside the German version, I would definetly recommend you to read it.
This story is about a group of school boys, who are persuaded by Kantorek, their class teacher, to go to war, and fight for Germany. Without even thinking about how their lives would be changed the schoolboys all decided to go to war, fearing that if they didn't they would be called cowards by they society that they lived in. Ironically, one young schoolboy Josef Behm was hesistant about the opportunity to fight in the war, he reallt didn't want to fight, but he allowed himself to be persuaded and unfortunatly was the first soldiers from their class to be killed. This had a really bad affect on the soldiers, who until then had trusted...

Goldilocks and the 3 werewolves
Review of Dog Soldiers (Wide Screen) by
damien.gallery
Advantages: No one will want to sit on the sofa with you while watching this
Disadvantages: Might put you off breakfast
...ripped to death and this sets the scene for the army boys to land in the sinister woods. Suspense builds up as they are mysteriously stalked by Captain Ryan of special ops and A.N other (the werewolves that will eventually attack them all) Captain Ryan is ambushed and his squad is wiped out. The army boys find them and ditch their blank ammunition for the special ops weapons but night is closing in and soon they are under full scale attack. They lose a man but escape in a passing landrover and are then driven to a nearby farmhouse by a young lady.
One of the soldiers is badly injured so they plot their escape. The farmhouse is mysteriously deserted and the secret is not revealed until near the end. THe team try to make their getaway but are stopped by the appearance of a large werewolf. Soon they are under full scale attack. They are being...

British Army - sorts the men from the boys
Review of British Army by
gt5952
Advantages: Good Experience
Disadvantages: Often Dangerous, Underpaid for half the work !
...The British Army provides a real way out for many people, it gives morales and standards to many young people, who otherwise wouldnt have a chance of survival in their home environment.
As an employer, it often neglects its duty of care, and the work environments can be exceptionally challenging, the day to day life often crosses the thin line of ridiculousness, and again, as an employer, the Ministry of Defence fails to protect its employees from several areas of harm that should not be found in the Army.
The Recruitment process usually starts in the Recruiting Station, where a potential recruit will make several visits to discuss their options.
After a few tests, they can choose a trade, in which the Army will train them to be proficient in their undertakings. As time continues the Soldier will gain valuable experience in his trade...

Did He Deserve To Become Disabled?
Review of Disabled - Wilfred Owen by
funky_monkey89
Advantages: very good poem with a hidden meaning
Disadvantages: some words/lines are hard to understand
...it when he visited a hospital during WW1. The poem is dedicated to another war poet called Jessie Pope.
Disabled is a poem about a soldier in a hospital who has no legs and possibly got one/two arms. So Wilfred Owen would have been in one of these hospitals in Britain. The title itself is negative, so this may mean that the poem is negative. The first verse is about a soldier who is a victim of war. He has no legs and arms “sewn short at elbow.” Owen shows that the soldier is a victim because he says he waits for dark. This means that the soldier waits for night, so he can sleep and forget about his disability. Then there’s an image of young boys playing in the park. The boys are echoes of his youth because he’s jealous as he can’t do anything no more. He can’t walk or play anymore. Then it says “Till gathering sleep had mothered them from him...

Raising the Red Flag
Review of Enemy At The Gates DVD by
Pborowiec
Advantages: Very good acting, characters, plot, effects, etc...
Disadvantages: Might not appeal to you if you don't like war films.
...lack of Americans. However, the film features a number of British actors and actresses (who don’t on the whole try to hide their nationality).
Jude Law plays Vassili Zaitsev, a peasant boy from the Urals, who possesses a flair for sniping. Also featured are Joseph Fiennes, as a Red Army Kommisar named Danilov, who comes up with the idea of making heroes out of ordinary soldiers to inspire a victory in Stalingrad, and Rachel Weiss as Tania Chernova, an intellectual serving in the Red Army. The ‘bad guy’ comes in the form of Major Konig, an elite Wermacht Sniper dispatched to flush out the Russian who has been causing so much trouble for the attacking German forces. Bob Hoskins takes on the (unlikely) role as Nikita Khrushchev, and succeeds in putting across an image of a man willing to go to any lengths (even sacrifice...

SOLDIER SOLDIER 2
Review of Soldier Soldier - The Complete Series 2 DVD by
kismet
Advantages: Excellent follow up to series 1
Disadvantages: none
...There were 7 episodes of series 2 of Soldier Soldier. Hong Kong is where the boys are sent to next. First screened in 1992.
A lot of old faces return this series, and several new ones as well.
To recap from my first summary to explain about the characters:
Tucker and Garvey, Dave and Donna, Paddy and Nancy, Tony and Joy. These are the couples that grab you right from the first series and take you through the next five series. (Series 6 and 7 were never so good once Tucker and Garvey had left).
It was an excellent series and very fresh and new when it first arrived. Written by Lucy Gannon.
It brought together Robson and Jerome (who can failed to have missed their hit single Unchained Melody!).
Dave Tucker played by Robson Greene,
Donna Tucker played by Rosie Rowell
Paddy Garvey played by Jerome Flynn
Nancy Garvey played...

Thoroughly immersive reading
Review of Andy McNab by
nilouche
Advantages: Fast paced, exciting, underpinned by 'real knowledge'
Disadvantages: may be a bit gritty for some ,
...Andy McNab joined the army at the age of 16 after having a 'colourful' childhood. He started in the infantry and moved on from there before joining 22 regiment of the SAS. He served as a soldier and special operative in 5 continents including the famous Bravo Two Zero mission durin the Gulf War in which he was captured, interogated and tortured before being freed.
McNab has been writing compelling reading for some time | | |
