Wonderful Sorrento
Review of Sorrento (Italy) by olgaa

Advantages: fantastic scenery and good food
Disadvantages: not enough time to see everything

...Sorrento has it all, the hospitality of Italy combined with a relaxed atmosphere. It is located on the Amalfi coast which is home to some of the most scenic views in all of Italy. Sorrento is very clean and has a small city that offers great seafood and all Italy's specialty cuisines. I would definatly reccomend it to everyone who wants to make the trip to Southern Italy, its worth it. Sorrento is an excellent alternative to staying in Napoli - it isn't plagued by the same poverty and graffiti. The town is beautiful and offers convenient ferries to Capri, one of the most beautiful places on earth. Sorrento is linked to Naples by an inter-city train system that is farily convienient. Early spring is especially perfect here because of all the orange and lemon groves in various backyards and gardens. Stayed at the "Sorrento Holiday House... Read review

Use it as a base .....
Review of Sorrento (Italy) by Janej47

Advantages: Lots to do if you are prepared to get off your butt ..
Disadvantages: can be expensive

...We went to Sorrento with my parents ( both just in their seventies at the time ) , staying in a little hotel up a steep side street just off the main road . I wont go into hotel details , as this is intended to be more of a piece about the Sorrento experience Sorrento town itself is quite unremarkable ( except for the ice cream shop which has around 80 different flavours . If you ever get there , you MUST try the Ferrero Rochas one ) There are the usual pavement bars , little cafe restaurants and shops , but nothing much to do apart from sit and watch the world go by So we didnt ! We escaped the over-enthusiastic hotel rep selling overpriced day trips ( in fact we escaped the whole " welcome party " ) and decided we would arrange our own thank you very much ! Tuesday we wandered around the town and found our bearings ( and the ice... Read review

Sorrento my view
Review of Sorrento (Italy) by GS26

Advantages: Lots to see,reasonable prices,
Disadvantages: noisy hotel on main street

...Sorrento. Landing at Naples Airport then a coach to Sorrento and our hotel in the older part of this city. At first sight an impression of narrow streets and pavements, when there are any, houses, shops and other buildings packed tightly together. The journey along and round the Bay of Naples gives a foretaste of this area of Italy. The mountains on one side and the road as you near Sorrento running along the side of the cliff, if that's how you describe the mountains that drop down to sea level. The streets of Sorrento are busy, noisy and narrow with buildings three to four storeys plus high and entrances through doorways at the front in alleyways round the back and staircases to the upper apartments. The sea is accessible by steps or roads descending steeply with twists and turns to arrive at small flat areas adjacent to it... Read review

Costa dei Fawlty
Review of Hotel Villa Fiorita, Sorrento by JoePoirot

Advantages: It's in Italy
Disadvantages: Everything else

...Villa Fiorita is advertised as a three star hotel in Sorrento on the Amalfi coast, justly famed for its natural beauty. First word of warning. Whilst the hotel is advertised as being in Sorrento, it is actually six kilometres from Sorrento. Whilst this might seem a short distance…be warned!!! Traffic on the Amalfi coast, apart from featuring some of the craziest, dangerous driving I’ve seen anywhere in the world – bar none – is sloooowwwwwwwww. There is just the one main road, it is two-lanes although drivers often invent a third non-existent one, and often you may well be sitting in a tailback for over an hour. Further, if you do not have your own transport the bus would often be full and just whiz past the hotel entrance leaving anyone waiting there stranded for at least another half-hour. Taxis are available but will set you back... Read review

One of best locations in Sorrento
Review of Carlton International, Sorrento by klofron

Advantages: Great Central Location
Disadvantages: Standards have dropped

...If you want to be close to the town and within easy walking distance of the town centre, The Hotel Carlton International is amongst the best located Hotels in Sorrento. For that alone it is worth considering as some holiday makers book thinking they are going to Sorrento, only to discover Sorrento is a five mile bus ride away. From this Hotel, it is no more that a couple of hundred yards to the Piazza Tasso, the main Square in Sorrento. We have stayed at this Hotel four times in recent years and on the whole enjoyed every visit. On our last vist, we noticed a distinct drop in statndards. The food was certainly no where near as good as previous visits, and satff were not as attentive and did not appear as happy in their work as they had previously. Since our last visit, I have read that several members of the Hotel Staff have left to work... Read review

Orange
Review of Sorrento (Italy) by Analytikerin

Advantages: Scenery, cultural.
Disadvantages: Too hot.

...The best holiday I ever had was in Sorrento. It is a truly magical place that I will never forget and I hope to visit it again when I can afford it (it wasn't a cheap holiday). I stayed in a hotel called 'The Sorrento Palace' which was absolutely beautiful. The first time I walked into the hotel my mouth just fell open because I had never stayed anywhere as grand as that. It has a six-tier pool, several restaurants and bars, a gym, and a small shop. The bedrooms are air-conditioned which was nice because it was so hot while I was there. The most memorable parts of my stay here were: The food (four course meal every night); and the piano bar. Sorrento town is beautiful. The locals are so friendly. There are two harbours which are both worth a visit. One is a little walk away from the town and this is where the locals have their fishing... Read review

My favourite corner of Italy!
Review of Sorrento (Italy) by klofron

Advantages: Very friendly and great food!
Disadvantages: I don't go often enough!

...I love to travel and experience new places. Most I've been to, once has been enough, after all, the world is a big place. But with Sorrento, I never tire of the place. I've visited six times now and will probably visit six more, then six more again. Just like the song says 'Tourna a Surriento'. SO WHAT IS IT THAT MAKES ME WANT TO RETURN AGAIN AND AGAIN? Thats a good question. Theres more than just one single thing I suspect there are a few other people who have written reviews expressing their passion for the area who can relate to my thoughts about the place. THE CLIMATE Most times we've visited Sorrento, we have been blessed with fine weather. We've visted between April and September and consider May and September to be the best. We went in August a few years ago and it was unbearably hot, so much so there were bush fires... Read review

Fantastic Honeymoon Hotel
Review of Hilton Sorrento Palace, Sorrento by GabyMolly

Advantages: Magnificent views, wonderful food, huge swimming pool
Disadvantages: Hilton prices

...The Sorrento Palace is set in the Amalfi hillside and boasts spectacular views across the bay of Naples to Mount Vesuvius. We spent a fantastic 7 nights here as part of our honeymoon in 2004, although if it hadn't have been our honeymoon we probably wouldn't have stayed here - well worth the money though (a week in August will set you back around £650pp). The rooms are fresh and clean and spacious, with satellite television, minibar and a balcony. The bar is comfortable and inviting, and there's a Martini station where you can try different martini cocktails (I thoroughly recommend the Sorrento Martini). There are six interconnecting outodoor swimming pools with plenty of sunbeds available and another large pool indoors which is open during the winter months. There's a poolside bar which also serves food. The main restaurant... Read review

Bella Sorrento
Review of Sorrento (Italy) by atticusuk

Advantages: Beautiful scenery
Disadvantages: Traffic noise

...Sorrento is located about a 90 minute coach ride south of Naples. Once you have escaped the urban sprawl of Naples the winding coast road gives you some beautiful views of the Gulf of Naples on your right whilst all the time the imposing height of Vesuvius is receding behind you. Sorrento is often regarded at the gateway to the Amalfi Coast. It is a bustling unashamedly tourist dominated Italian town with a population of 20,000 people which is swelled to bursting point in the summer months. Our visit came at the end of August and the first week in September and coincided with the last weekend of the Italian holiday month of August. As such we go to appreciate Sorrento with all its home base and foreign visitors and a slightly quieter Sorrento when it played hoist to mostly English and to a lesser degree German visitors. Sorrento in a day - it's all you need!
Review of Sorrento (Italy) by fizzytom

Advantages: Pleasant old town, beautiful scenery
Disadvantages: Few proper beaches, inflated prices

...When it comes to travel I have permanently itchy feet. Even when I'm on holiday I just can't satisfy that itch and so when I get back home I often feel that I haven't done justice to a particular destination. My holidays lately have been based around touring an area or making my base in a good central location and taking day trips to nearby places. Sorrento was one of my must-visits when in Naples for a week earlier this year. An easy to negotiate hour or so train journey from Naples (only 25KM but stops everywhere), Sorrento offers a very pleasant alternative to the hustle and bustle of southern Italy's largest city. The train journey itself is integral to the day out. You travel on the Circumvesuviana line which passes very closes to the Mount Vesuvius and the towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum which were famously devastated... Read review
