A Handy Little Speaker Cabinet
Review of Marshall MR 1936 StD Box by
richard_richard
Advantages: Good sound quality, quite compact
Disadvantages: A tad heavy!
...The Marshall 1936 Speaker Cabinet is a cabinet designed for use with a Marshall amplifier head. The cabinet contains two 12” speakers and has an output rating of 150 watts (RMS).
Most people are probably aware of the appearance of Marshall amplifiers and speaker cabinets. If you have watched a band on Top of the Pops and by “band” I mean a set of musicians playing instruments as opposed to 5 teenagers dancing about the place, or that awful Busted lot! Anyway, ranting aside, you may have seen the big Marshall amplifiers and speakers lurking in the background behind the guitar players!
The Marshall speaker cabinet has been around for many years. It came out in its first guise (a cabinet containing four 12” speakers) back in the mid sixties, as a response to the pop and rock bands of the day demanding greater...

Floorstanding speakers - best of the bunch !
Review of Acoustic Energy Aegis Evo Three Floorstanding Speakers by
g8ina
Advantages: Sweet transparent sound, bi wireable, solidly built.
Disadvantages: None yet found !
...of these shops were very accommodating, especially Salop HiFi in Shrewsbury, thanks guys. I really appreciated your time.
I listened to yet more Tannoys (nice), B&Ws (very dry), KEFs (too big), Quad's (way too pricey), and several other very reputable brands before giving these British made newcomers to the market a go .... At first I wasn't too keen..... Acoustic Energy ? Who are they ? Never heard of them ..... I was of the "old school" of HiFi after all, with fond memories of Quad, Garrard, Leak, Thorens and Rogers.
BUT, as soon as I stuck my favourite LP on their Linn turntable, and listened to it via the Denon AV1803 amp (the same as I had at home already), I knew within a few minutes that I had found what I was looking for.
This is a speaker with enough body volume to offer a depth of sound that you can *only* get with big cabinets...

Movies For Halloween - The Cabinet Of Dr Caligari
Review of Das Cabinet Des Dr Caligari (Silent) by
DavidJay
Advantages: One of those "greatest film ever" regulars, and with good reason.
Disadvantages: None.
...There is something inherently eerie, otherworldly, about silent pictures. Whatever the merit of the film itself, the faint flickering of the frames (however good the restoration), the grain, the occasionally over-theatrical performances (I'm generalising horribly here, I know. There is nothing theatrical about many of the performances in, for example, Benjamin Christensen's masterpiece Haxan), even the nature of the musical soundtrack, disembodied and carrying on with little synchronisation with movements, actions onscreen...
Eerie, yes.
And how much more so when these elements are wrapped around a picture already reeking of the uncanny? A picture, perhaps, like Robert Weine's 1919 The Cabinet Of Dr Caligari.
The Cabinet Of Dr Caligari is a masterpiece. Routinely propping up the top end of Best Films Ever Made lists...

Marshall 7152 Dynamic Bass Cabinet
Review of Marshall 7152 Dynamic Bass Cabinet by
wukintn
Advantages: Good sound
Disadvantages: Heavy!
...Solid! That's what it is, no question. I bought the cab new in 2000 and use it with a Marshall 3520 integrated bass amp 200w MOSFET. Initially, I had problems. At mid-volumes the bottom end would fart and lose power. After seeking advice, I was told that the amp couldn't cope with the "low" impedance cab. The amp is rated at 200w at 4 ohms; I measured the cab and found it was 3.4 ohms, slightly less than the 4 ohms stated on the rear plate. I then rewired the cab - two 10" speakers in series, then paralelled with the 15". The resulting resistance measurement showed 6.7 ohms. I plugged it back in to the amp and what an amazing sound came out! I'm happy as Larry with it, powerful, ounchy, just magic. I was playing Ernie Ball Stingray (4 string) through it. I bought an Ovation 5 string acoustic bass and found that the internal preamp made...

SX300 ROCKS!
Review of Electro-Voice SX300 PA Speaker by
ILIKEMONEY
Advantages: Great mid-high range speaker
Disadvantages: not so good bass
...Introduction
The Electro-voice SX300 PA speaker is an extremely lightweight PA speaker, but still delivers in both sound quality and volume as bigger and heavier speakers. I myself bought these speakers for use as monitors for my music studio, but since then I have used them for discos and other activities at my school, as they are easy to transport. I use these speakers with two EV bass cabinets and power them with two peavey power amplifiers. This rig is amazing for small gigs and vocal announcements in small-medium sized venues.
Construction
The SX300's are made mainly of plastic but they do have metal fixings on them to secure the whole cabinet. The speaker mesh on the SX300 is solid metal, not the cheap bendy stuff, and takes a lot of force to damage it. On one side of the cabinet is a handle, in my opinion it would have...

iPod speakers
Review of Altec Lansing IM3 Ipod speakers by
xxnatashaxx
Advantages: Portable and lightweight
Disadvantages: You have to be very careful with them.
...I received these speakers as a Birthday present in March from a friend. I was thrilled with them as I had been desperate for a docking station or speakers to play my iPod on.
The speakers:
The speakers are very attractive and compact yet produce a rich deep bass sound, which is not always present on speakers of this size. They are very lightweight and fold to close at 15 ounces and 8 inches wide, 5.4 inches deep and 1.2 inches thick. The box the speakers come in quotes "With four AA batteries your speakers will play continuously for twenty-four hours" which sounds brilliant but in my experience on 2 x AA batteries they will play for 19 hours.
As well as built in controls there is a wireless remote but you do have to be quite near to the speakers and at the right angle for the remote to actually work!
The speakers also act...

Are you after some new speaker's?
Review of Monitor Audio Silver S1 Bookshelf Speakers by
consumerpower
Advantages: Looks, sound, build, just about everything really
Disadvantages: You can't buy them new anymore, Monitor Audio has replaced them with a newer model the RS1
...how well they are built. With a beautifully crafted real wood veneer, a very modern looking silver alloy driver and a gold coloured metallic tweeter protected by silver mesh they manage to mix the old with contemporary perfectly. Too many speaker's within the S1's price and performance range have a very bland, old fashioned appearance. At the other end of the spectrum very modern and exotically styled speakers do so at the expensive of looking a bit cheap and plasticky. The S1's balanced appearance of old with new was what first attracted me to them .
One of the unique features I like most about the design is the fact that the round metal mesh protecting the tweeter can be removed, in the same way you would remove the speaker cover's. This is a feature that will help improve your ability to hear the tweeter accurately and you may...

Horses for courses
Review of Member Advice on Speakers by
Pritch
Advantages: Can make a real difference to the sound of your hi-fi
Disadvantages: A real minefield of competing products
...makes them fairly chunky. The result of this is that resonance and flatulent noises from the speaker cabinet itself are cut down. An old stereo system that I used to own had speaker cabinets made out of 5mm chipboard, and used to create a wide variety of farty noises depending on what you were listening to. As an aside to this, you'll find that better speakers tend to be a little on the heavy side. The speakers that I own weighed in at 13kg each when I bought them. For those who want to cut down further on resonance there's various tricks you can try to weigh the speakers down, including made to measure weights to rest on the top of the speaker, or filling the bottom of the speaker or stand with metal shot.
Next, what sort of speaker do you want? These are generally divided up into bookshelf and floorstanding speakers. Which...
