...I switched from First Telecom to One.Tel a year ago, and have never looked back. I make a lot of long distance calls (2.5p a minute) and calls to the US (3p / min) and am amazed each month at how little I have to pay for them. One.Tel aren't great for everything: I still use First Telecom to phone home from abroad, for example. I also make sure I use BT when calling national rate (e.g. 0845) numbers. But the bills are accurate, they tell me who I've phoned and when, and they're great value.... Read review

...Over 20 years ago we would phone family in the States. This was a major production, exciting but not really very rewarding. The cost was astronomical, the cost for a five-minute phone call in today's money was about £25. Now with one Tele, it is cheaper to phone the States than to ring my next-door neighbour's during the day. With One.Tel it is simple, no prepayment, no changing phone companies, enter your code that you are connected to the States for 03p a minute. They offer a whole range of different rates. The company also offers a free dialling box which plugs into your main phone socket allowing users access the cheapest rates. The cost of phoning around the world is becoming very cheap. Advantages: So,so, so cheap

...One.tel must have saved me hundreds. It's easy to set up, no need for an engineer to call. It costs nothing other than the phone calls YOU choose to use it for (well, £1 per month if you don't pay by direct debit) Once you're registered, you simply dial a 4 digit pin before you make your call and it is charged at one.tel's rates and does not show up on your BT bill. The only quibble is that if you don't have a BT line you need to dial an 0800 number instead of a 4 digit pin, but hey - that's not a big ask in return for the savings... I use it mainly to phone France 4p per min instead of approx 25p per min with BT/Telewest. One.tel are a fair company and do warn you not to use their service to phone mobile or premium rate no's as they're not competitive. Overall a well organised, promising company... Read review

Advantages: Easy startup, internet billing
Disadvantages: Difficulty getting access at times

...Last summer i signed up with OneTel for my ISP for internet access. Having already got an email account with Lineone i only wanted a cheap access route and for the limited amount of access i need OneTel seemed to fit the bill perfectly (excuse the pun). The set up was easy and very clear, basically every minute costs me 1p at whatever time of the day i log on. The billing is now done exclusively over the web and i generally spend around £6 per month although the beauty is that when I'm away (quite often) then i pay nothing at all. My only criticism has arisen over the last couple of months. More often the lines are engaged and frequently i have to try at least 6 times to get a connection. It seems that OneTel are victims of their own success i can only hope that they will increase the number of lines soon.... Read review

...The best thing about One-Tel’s internet access is it always costs 1p per minute even at peak rate. This is around a quarter of the cost of a local rate BT peak call. There’s no signup fee, no service charge and no obligation to use it. You dial up through a free phone number and One-Tel bill you. If you don’t use the service you will just get a blank bill as long as you pay by direct debit, otherwise there’s a £1 administration charge monthly. So far the service has been very good, I have connected nearly every time and it’s quite fast. Other services include cheap International phone calls and UK national calls costing 2.5p per minute at all times. You don’t need to change your phone provider, on BT lines you only use One-Tel by dialing a prefix before dailing or by connecting the optional autodial unit which available free. All... Read review

I have been a One.Tel subscriber for about two years and the majority of my phone charges are for international calls. I have both BT and NTL phone lines and have subscribed to a number of different services with varying results. One.Tel, like a number of other operators you will have seen advertised, are basically bandwidth resellers. The way the system works is that the operator buys bulk capacity from network operators and resells to its subscribers. By shopping around it can find the cheapest national or international trunk routes and this, with a number of other factors, enables it to undercut the traditional operators. Disadvantages: Moving to a new home wasn't as easy as it should have been

...One.Tel was recommended to me some six years ago by a colleague after he got sick of hearing me moan about the difference in cost between phoning Northern Ireland and phoning Eire ... (I had a mate who is a soldier in N.I. and my wifes family all lived in Eire) Armed with a contact number for One.Tel I called and I still can't beleive just how easy it was to get started (and neither can any of the people that I have converted to using the One.Tel network), no need for credit cards or proof of ID just tell them about your current phone supplier, telephone number and account reference number and they set it up. Within 24 hours I was able to use their network to make calls and within 48 hours a welcome pack arrived with all the info I needed. ...OneTel.Net is an ISP with a different charging structure to most others. There are no sign-up or monthly charges, you only pay for connect time (at 1p/min at any time), and access is via an 0808 freephone number, so there are normally no phone call costs. Billing is by direct debit. I signed up for the service mainly as a cheap ISP for mobile use with my Nokia communicator on Orange (calls to 0808 numbers are free for Orange contract customers, see other opinion), also as a backup ISP for RedHotAnt, which is sometimes difficult to connect to (see other opinion). I have found it excellent for these purposes, and 1p/min is very reasonable for daytime access. ...There are a lot of companies out there these days who offer discounted phone calls by routing via their own networks and not BT’s. I can’t comment on the others but after three years of using OneTel, I have nothing but praise for them. You don’t need to change your phone number. There’s no extra wiring and no hassle. Here’s how it works. There are two options. The first is to key in a four digit code before the telephone number. This ensures the call is routed via OneTel not BT. The call then appears on a separate monthly bill from OneTel. The other option is to use a “smart box”. This little gizmo plugs into the BT wall socket and as long as your phone is plugged into it, all calls are then routed via OneTel without you having to remember to key in the four digit number.
