Tequila and table dancing in Tijuana, Mexico
Review of Tijuana (Mexico) by
MissDirect
Advantages: Good shopping, bars and clubs
Disadvantages: Can be sleazy
...take passport and/or visa, and be prepared for questioning at the border control when re-entering the usa. The US authorities are understandably, very security conscious. The border at Tijuana is said to be the busiest in the world, and illegal immigration is a big problem so be prepared for a wait!
My experiences at the border was that when entering Mexico there are no controls whatsoever. When leaving Mexico, on one visit, we waited for 2 hours before we went through. At other times, which were very early mornings, we near enough walked through.
Immigration are likely to ask if you bought anything, may check your bags, and want to know your intentions in entering america.
* tj- partying and shopping! *
tijuana is often referred to as "t-j", maybe english speakers are too lazy to use the spanish pronunciation. This border...

Tijuana - See it once it's worth it.
Review of Tijuana (Mexico) by
dalg
Advantages: Good bargins in shops. Easy to get to from San Diego, and the food is great.
Disadvantages: nope, can't think of any
...So I was in holiday in San Diego, and thought Tijuana, Mexico, I fancy Mexico, let's check it out. So off we went. took the hire car down to the border, a short drive from San Diego, and once you get there, there is a huge car park, and shuttle bus service. (I've heard that there is a train service from San Diego to the border too, but I never tried it).
For a couple of dollars return, the bus takes you over the border, and after a short drive, you are in Tijuana main street. The bus service was ecxellent and very regular.
The town centre is basically one long street with shops, bars, restraunts etc. We did wander down a couple of the side streets, but turned back after not finding anything of interest. Mind you with no guide book with us, and no information about the place at all, I think it's a safe bet we missed out...

not only "vice and sin"
Review of Tijuana (Mexico) by
traveller55
Advantages: *****
Disadvantages: -
...Southern California.
We leave San Diego and cross the USA-Mexico border at San Ysidro and then we reach Tijuana.
In 1911 the "Federal" (Mexican federal soldiers) slaughtered 31 "Mangonistas" (rebels) that just kept the control of Tijuana after the Mexican revolution..
From 1915 this city became a destination for some Americans of San Diego that come here for horse races and cockfights, to bet in the casinos. Then, two years later, the Government of California decided ti shut-down all cabarets and Tijuana was ready to open them on its territory and the number of people from San Diego increased a lot.
Tijuana become the "wildest in the wild" when in 1920 the Federal Government of the United States of America introduced the law against alcoholics and all Californians elected this city as their preferred destination.
Also nowadays...

Mexico a go go
Review of General: Mexico by
mikeydred
Advantages: Fantastic Scenery, Friendly People, Great Food, Cheap Drink
Disadvantages: Big and Hot
...was a supplement for the premium class option. I travelled with Air 2000. We also had a five hour coach journey after we got there so be prepared for that as well. It will also help if you can avoid an immediate long journey at your home end by booking a room near the airport. The total door to door time for our return journey was 23 hours.
~~ Size
Mexico is big. You may think a trip down the shops is a long way , but that's nothing compared to Mexico. It is really big. When you look at the map you think , it's just that bit at the bottom of the USA , but if you check the Lonely Planet guide it tells you that flights between Cancun and Mexico City take two and a half hours and a bus journey of thirty hours (Mexico City to Tijuana) is not uncommon. The roads are straight and long and centres of civilisation are very far between. We spent our first...

wildest of the wild
Review of Tijuana (Mexico) by
madhatter7880
Advantages: lively, can never get bored
Disadvantages: none
...which was a 5 star hotel. It was big hotel. It had 165 rooms, pool, gym and a magnificent restaurant. It was expensive though, but well worth the stay.
Tijiuna is very a vibrant city. Not only does it offer the wild entertainment but culture of Mexico. Everyone there is very friendly and helpful, and do speak english.
Tipping is customary in Tijuana, so make sure you have spare change in your pockets and always carry photo ID.
There is always something to do here, so much you'll find that you won't have time.
Bienvenidos! (See all of Tijuana!)...

VIVA MEXICO
Review of Mexico City (Mexico) by
xelan
Advantages: More filled with excitement than Robbie Williamses pants
Disadvantages: Keep your ehad screwed on and there are none.
...Mexico City. The world’s fourth biggest city, with probably one of the worst reputations. I went there not by choice but out of necessity because that was the only way you could have gotten me there. I was living in Mexico, about five hours away from Mexico City in a place called San Luis Potosi when my passport ran out. That meant only one thing. A trip to the British Embassy in Mexico City.
I was terrified.
Because you read about it don’t you? You read about all the horrific things that happen in Mexico City. You read that Mexico has the highest Kidnapping rate in the world. (It’s just taken over from Columbia) You read about people that only stepped out of their hotel rooms for a second and are mugged on the doorstep. So I wasn’t looking forward to it.
This is what I found.
We took the bus in and hit Mexico City...

IS THIS THE LINE FOR THE TIJUANA TAXI?
Review of Manchester Grand Hyatt, San Diego by
Newfloridian
Advantages: Vast, opulent, breathtaking, central to downtown
Disadvantages: You might feel overwhelmed. Can be expensive
...Forsaking my usual Floridian haunts temporarily, I made two trips to San Diego and Southern California in the Autumn of last year. As the second visit was part conference and part vacation we thought that we would 'push the boat out ' and stay at the Manchester Grand Hyatt hotel which has to be one of the most striking edifices in the region.
San Diego is known as the home base for the US Pacific fleet and is only 20 miles from the border with Mexico. My business colleague who lives and works in the area told me that the whole of the quayside and waterfront had been completely rebuilt over the course of the last twenty five years. Central to this redevelopment is the marina, the convention centre and a number of five star hotels.
THE HOTEL
The Manchester Grand Hyatt hotel consists of two skyscrapers connected by a vast...

If you don't want to get mugged or kidnapped in Mexico City - Read this.
Review of Mexico City (Mexico) by
travelbug
Advantages: Lots of fun, loads to do, easy to get to other places
Disadvantages: Can be very dangerous
...I used to live in Mexico city. There are a couple of things that all travellers there should know. For a start, never take a taxi off the street. Get your hotel to call you a sitio taxi. Your name and destination are then recorded. This is important because in Mexico City there are many kidnappings, muggings and murders. You will be targeted if you don't look latino.
If for some reason you have to get in a taxi off the street there are a couple of things that you can do to protect yourself. The first is to make sure the license plate starts with an 'L'or an 'S' if it doesn't it probably means that the taxi is stolen and that the person driving it is in a crime ring which mugs passengers. The second check is to make sure that the number on the license plate matches the number on the side of the door. The third check...

The Floating Gardens of Mexico City
Review of Xochimilco, Mexico City by
zoe_page
Advantages: Unique day or half day trip
Disadvantages: A fair distance out of town
...Having lived in Mexico City since the start of July, I can't believe it's taken me over 3 months to visit this place, since it's one of the most famous attractions in the city and has been since the 1920s. Xochimilco (soch-ee-milk-oh) is an area located to the south of the city, known for its series of canals, the remains of old Lake Xochimilco. Quick trivia here, this was home to canoeing and rowing competitions when Mexico hosted the Olympics back in 1968.
~ Getting There and When To Go ~
Xochimilco isn't just a bit south of the city, it's a long way away, so much so that it took me over an hour to get there and I already live south of the centre. Metros only run as far as Tasqueña (end of Line 2, the blue one) and from there you can either catch the Tren Ligero ("electric train" or as I would call it...a tram) or take...

A bit of paradise in Mexico
Review of Dreams Resort, Tulum by
Tish29
Advantages: Good food, lovely staff, ,lovely atmosphere
Disadvantages: A bit in the middle of nowhere
...Before getting married in July, the inevitable question of the honeymoon came up. The choice was endless. My husband and I wanted a quiet place, all-inclusive, in the Caribbean and a little bit of luxury. The resort to be family friendly was also a deciding thing as our 15 months old daughter would be accompanying us on this trip. After going through loads of travel brochure and internet website we set our hearts on Tulum, Mexico. We had been to Mexico in the past (well we had been to Tijuana and Cancun) and we felt that we didn't experience the proper Mexico so we were keen to go back.
Dreams resort sounded fantastic as it was meant to be 5 stars with 5 restaurants, 4 bars, 2 pools right by the beach. I have to admit that the pictures on their website were beautiful and we couldn't wait to go.
Here is the low down:
