Better than LONDON!!!
Review of Sheffield (England) by
Lowey
Advantages: Everything
Disadvantages: None
...Sheffield is one of the best places to be. It is full of attractions for everyone. It has a great nightlife with many clubs including Gatecrasher at Republic. There is a huge shopping centre called Meadowhall, which also has a cinema. There is a centertainment near to it called UGC, which has really big screens and a lot of leg room. In the city centre there are also quite a lot of shops and an area to rest in and admire called the Peace Gardens which has really beautiful fountains. If you want to study Sheffield is also a great place, becuase it has two universities: Sheffield University and Hallam University....

Great Place
Review of Sheffield University by
cefa
Advantages: city based
Disadvantages:
...I did my MSc (& Phd) at Sheffield university in control engineering (one of the few universities with this speciality). It is a great place very freindly with some fantastic country side just next door. It is good for bands, bars and clubs and has lots of other students since Sheffield Hallam (the old poly) university is also in town. I really enjiyed it and would recommend it to anyone. Very lively and friendly. The student bit of town is at one end and feels very safe. The accomodation is quite cheap and you have all the facilities of a big city....

The UK's best Uni
Review of Sheffield University by
CookStool
Advantages: Good halls, good uni, good city
Disadvantages: Makes other uni's look bad.
...I am a student at Sheffield and i must agree with the other posts here that Sheffield is great.
Most of the halls are in the Broomhill area which is where Sheffield's rich and famous live so there is very little chance of mugging etc. I would recommend to anyone going to Sheffield uni to live in hall in the first year. You get to meet loads of people, you have your own bar and events are oganised by the hall for the hall. I am a little baised but i would urge people to stay on the Endcliffe site (Earnshaw, Halifax, Sorby etc.).
The uni is undoubtedly very good but few people rate it as highly as they should. A little research will uncover league tables that place Sheffield in the top 10 and above uni's such as Durham.
The city has just been awarded the best city for students by a Virgin publication. One of the other opinions...

Universal University
Review of Sheffield University by
Eudora
Advantages: Friendly, Highly Rated, Cheaper in the North, Lots Happening.
Disadvantages: It's colder than in the South!
...After experiencing a very unhappy time at Bristol University, I think I have become more critical and analytical about universities in general. I am currently studying at Sheffield and I can honestly say that there is not one thing that I'd change about the place, except maybe the cold in the winter!
Unlike Bristol, Sheffield has a rich diversity of people - with representations from most cultures - which gives the place a very "international" feel. There is also so much happening here, not just in the city centre with all the pubs and clubs, but in the university itself. There's a night event organised by the union every night - each being fun and inexpensive.
Academically, the university has an excellent repuatation. As student welfare is at the heart of the union, students are generally happier and more able to cope...

I love Sheffield and so will you
Review of Sheffield in general by
judithritchie
Advantages: great place, great ents facilities, good shopping facilities, 2 universities
Disadvantages: the weather!
...Sheffield is one of those cities that has everything you could ever need to survuve and more! I have lived here 2 and a half years since I came to university here. Which one? Well, Sheffield is the home to 2 universities, the University of Sheffield uptown, and Hallam University, downtown. So the place is crawling with students. You just can't get away from us, as there are easily 10,000 students at Sheffield and maybe the same number at Hallam. As a consequence to studying at university, I have only ever lived near the university, but a huge proportion of Sheffield is made up of suburban areas from Heely, Crookes, Walkley, to Firth Park and Shiregreen, Oughtibridge and Lowedges, there are miles of villages to live in, some not as nice as others. But in the compact but happening city centre, there are many high street banks, an Anglican...

Sheffield - England's lost industrial city
Review of Sheffield (England) by
Fuzzythehedgehog
Advantages: Great public transport and lots to do
Disadvantages: Not really ideal for longer than a day trip because tourism hasn't really developed here yet.
...I'm a Geography student at Sheffield University and I've just finished my first year. Sheffield is a great city to live in, and surprisingly is a very interesting city to visit.
The thing about Sheffield is that everyone thinks that it's a city in decline, in fact large parts of the city are actually thriving. Sheffield deserves to have a good tourist industry but because of its reputation it seems to be doing really badly. It's not for want of trying by the city council, they have worked to develop interesting things to do (e.g. the National Centre for Popular music (which unfortunately had to close through lack of support)) and perhaps the best public transport system outside London.
The best way to take in Sheffield is perhaps as a day trip if you are staying in the Peak District which is just next door. There is still loads to do...

Sheffield University - Yeah, quite nice
Review of Sheffield University by
Fuzzythehedgehog
Advantages: Excellent city to be a student in.
Disadvantages: Large university and halls a long way from main campus.
...I've just finsished my first year as a Geography student at Sheffield and I've thoroughly enjoyed it. Sheffield University is pretty good, but Sheffield is an excellent city to be a student in.
Firstly the University itself is very large. This is good because it means that there is always lots going on, i.e. loads of societies and clubs, but it often means that you don't feel part of the community like you would at school or a smaller University. Having said that because there are so many students it means that the Union is realtively rich so can afford some quite decent acts and bands and there are some quite good club nights there. The union shop is particularly excellent selling everthing a student needs at relatively cheap prices.
If you are about to start you first year you will probably be staying in halls. I didn...

A GREAT UNI!
Review of Sheffield University by
PrinceCharles
Advantages: Fun, Gatecrasher, Cheap Trams and A Good Place To Study
Disadvantages: Gets quite cold somtimes
...After visiting several universities I decided on Sheffield (A choice I do not regret!). The courses are great, theres loads of clubs and sports on offer etc., and even a free swimming pool. The city its self is great! There is really good nightlife (Gatecrasher), Meadowhall (a huge out-of-town mall) an excellent tram service and the uni it's self is just a few minutes away from the best dry ski slope I have ever seen! Reasonable priced acomadation is easy to find. The whole place is really friendly and clean. Over a third of graduates continue to live in Sheffield after they've finished their degree! I would recommend this uni to anyone who wants to study in a great place and have a lot of fun!...

Why choose Sheffield
Review of Sheffield University by
leonardholliday
Advantages: Great social life, loads of students in the city
Disadvantages: Sheffield is quite hilly and the halls of residence are pretty far away from the university.
...I'm a first year journalism studies student at Sheffield University and to be honest the choice of Sheffield was based purely on the courses excellnt repuatation and took little interest in the city and university itself. I did not expect to get grades good enough to attend so I reluctantly made it my first choice and was surprised and a little daunted when I actually got accepted.
However upon arriving here I have been overwhelemd by how fantastic this university is. The students union, voted best in the country by Virign University Guides last year, is helpful and gives students a wide range of services and events that I have enjoyed over the past year.
Accomodation here can be hit or miss, as a self-catering house student, rented from the university's extensive amount of property situated very close to the union and town centre, i...
