Going Native Sixty Years Hence
Review of Waverley - Walter Scott by tyger

Advantages: Great Classic Historical Fiction
Disadvantages: My copy had very small print

...This enjoyable classic is entertaining as well as educational. Is is very easy to be carried away to another time if you have the time to lose yourself in this masterpiece of historical fiction. Plot: ********* (You've been warned, it's a long one! But this is an epic after all....) Young Edward Waverley is a dreamer and a romantic who is ready for an adventure but he has no idea what's in store for him when this novel begins. His upbringing has been shared between his Whig father and his Tory uncle who can't stand each other's politics but are united in wanting to do their best for the Waverley heir. His education has been a bit neglected and he has spent too much time on novels and poetry when he should have been working on his classics. Edward is a member of the English gentry with a nice estate to inherit and no particular plans... Read review

PS Waverley & MV Balmoral
Review of PS Waverley by Gavita

Advantages: See the Beauty of The Coast
Disadvantages: None unless your sea sick

...The two historic vessels operated by Waverley Excursions head office in Glasgow are two of only a few remaining coastal excursion vessels within the UK. The ships themselves can carry around 800 passengers (Waverley is liscenced to carry more) to various destinations and cruises around the British coastline. Recently supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, the PS Waverley (last sea going paddle steamer in the world! )has been restored to her beauty, whilest the MV balmoral has began phase one of her regeneration programme. One board both vessels, aft on the main deck there are self service restaurants with a wide variety of snacks, tea, coffee light refreshments and hot meals. Again on both ships the main bar is located forward. Plastic glasses are available if you wish to take your drinks up on deck to better enjoy the scenery... Read review

Be a Time Traveller!
Review of PS Waverley by thecatsmother

Advantages: a wonderful journey into the past, brilliant scenery
Disadvantages: sometimes the weather doesn't cooperate!

...It's not often nowadays you get the chance to have a day out on a means of transport that has real soul. If you like steam trains and vintage cars, you will probably love the paddle steamer Waverley. Stepping aboard PS Waverley is setting foot in another era, where the pace of life was gentle and elegance was paramount. THE HISTORY Waverley is a deceptive old girl, because she's not quite as old as most people think when they first meet her. She was built on the Clyde by A&J Inglis in 1947. In those days, a fleet of paddle steamers plied their trade up and down the Clyde estuary, taking Glaswegian holidaymakers to the Clyde resorts like Dunoon, Rothesay, and Largs. In local parlance these people were going "doon the watter", and there was such fierce competition among the rival ships that there were many near collisions... Read review

Buffet Time
Review of Jimmy Chung's by matty168

Advantages: Consistent, Good Prices
Disadvantages: Very Rushed atmosphere

...Jimmy Chungs is a well known Oriental Buffet Restaurant which have a restaurant in 5 out of the 6 Cities of Scotland. Those are Aberdeen,Dundee,Glasgow,Stirling and Inverness. There are two branches in Edinburgh City Centre, one is on Waverley Bridge and the other is in Grindlay Street. My review is based on the Waverley Bridge branch which is the first restaurant you come to once you leave Waverley Station so therefore it is probably to no surprise that is is always busy. Prices vary between £5.49 for lunch on Monday-Fridays and over £10 for Fridays and Saturdays evenings. when you come into the restaurant, a waiter or waitress will ask you how many people and then they will show you to your table and they will then immediately ask you what you'd like to drink which seems absolutely daft considering you have only just sat down... cosy cantina
Review of Viva Mexico, Edinburgh by SP

Advantages: Great food, great location
Disadvantages: Little parking, bad sangria!

...Ok, not once, not even twice but many times have I been to this cracking wee mexican gaff - the food's always good, the location (Cockburn St- Old Town) is handy for entertainment / Waverley Station and the staff are huge fun too Don't try to get a booking during the festival (August)as they they won't accept one - it's a turn up & wait situation - and you'll not regret it! Their menu is full of the normal tex-mex munchies but a special board is generally brimming with morsels worth a bash at - but one thing I can't recommend...the sangria! More than little bland - so stick with the Marguerita's and slam happily away! If you like something smallish, with a little style and elegance to give you an atmospheric setting to your food & drink then Viva Mexico is the place to go... Read review

Why here?
Review of University of the West of England by carlos19

Advantages: Rich, varied nightlife. Lots to do. Good resources.
Disadvantages: Some bad accomodation. Class numbers.

...If you're thinking of coming to university and UWE is one of your choices I'd think about what you really want from university, and what you like. Bristol is a fairly big city and maybe if you're coming from the country it could be a bit of a culture shock and you may not get on with it. But if you've had experience in a place like this before and you like the non-stop rush that the city brings then this is for you. Also the university itself is one of the most populous and there's new people everywhere to meet so you won't run out of friends that's for sure. If you're thinking about staying in halls, from my experience it would be better to opt for the newer halls of residence, e.g - Waverley House, or Transom House. This is because sites like Colston Street are very old and sometimes can be a bit depressing. Teaching here is ok... Read review

SAY HELLO, WAVERLEY GOODBYE
Review of Aquarius Waverley House Hotel, London by LostWitness

Advantages: Central location, fair rates, decent food
Disadvantages: Room decor, basic facilities

...Finding a good hotel in London is not an easy task. You can, of course, easily find a decent hotel if you are a lottery millionaire, but for the rest of us, it can be a real struggle to find anything more than a fleapit for less than a hundred pounds. The budget hotel chains have not really made any in roads into the London accommodation scene, with only a sprinkling of Travel Inns here and there. The worst part about the Travel Inns in London is that they now charge around £80 per night, for what is a very basic level of accommodation. Fortunately, there are much better deals to be had out there, without spending millions, and being the good corporate citizen that I am, I have made it my quest to seek them out and appraise them for your information. ABOUT THE WAVERLEY HOUSE HOTEL The Aquarius Waverley House occupies a prime site... Read review

in, round, through, over, under edinburgh!
Review of Getting around in Edinburgh by missjiggy23

Advantages: fairly frequent service and is fairly cheap
Disadvantages: exact change only

...can jump off and on the bus if you like, the saver ticket makes it a cost effective option. The buses are faily frequent and all bus stops, or the majority of them anyway have maps of the bus route on it which gives tourists a good idea of where to get off and also if theyre going to be getting on the right bus! There are 2 train stations, Waverley and Haymarket, which are at oppostive ends of Prince's Street, one of the main shopping streets, in Edinburgh. Waverley station is the main one, with shops like WH Smith and Boots as well as ticket collection/booking and the obligatory coffee shop. the bus station hasn't long been built, its less than 5 years old and is clean, well lit and has information about bus times, timetables and ticket booking facilities. I'd say for a city Edinbirgh has great transport links, and as I only stay 40... Read review

Art Treat in Edinburgh
Review of National Gallery of Scotland by tyger

Advantages: Great morning or afternoon browsing session
Disadvantages: Only a coffee shop would improve it

...The National Gallery of Scotland is an art lover's treat. It is just the right size for a morning or afternoon of browsing and there's enough variety to make repeat visits worthwhile. The Gallery is located on the Mound which makes it convenient and easy to find from the Old Town, Princes Street, or Waverley Station. The outside is an elegant neo-classical building designed by William Henry Playfair so it's not surprising that it's next to the Playfair Steps. Inside you'll find paintings and sculptures ranging in date from the Middle Ages until about 1900. The collection is European and Scottish in character and includes works by Raphael, Titian, Van Dyck, Rembrant, Rubens, Gainsbourgh, Turner, Degas, Gauguin, and Raeburn to name but a few. My favourite rooms are the ground floor rooms which are arranged in a traditional style... Read review

The Verdict Is Good
Review of Jury's Hotel, Edinburgh by polydeuces

Advantages: Reasonable prices, good location
Disadvantages: Quite noisy

...The Jury’s Inn Hotel is on Jeffrey Street in Edinburgh making it very close and handy for the Royal Mile and overlooking the Waverley railway station. Indeed the room I had recently fronted onto the street with the railway station below and I do have to say there was more noise from the road and from the trains than you would have wished to hear. The hotel itself is part of the Irish owned Jury’s chain and the rooms are quite comfortable and above average in size. There is the usual supply of tea and coffee making stuff and toiletries in the bathroom. Whilst the normal rate may be £79 for a room I got mine for a £45 per night corporate single rate which for a hotel so close to the city centre offers good value. The hotel restaurant is called Archers and offers a good menu and two courses of starter and main course will set... Read review
