...No sooner are Courtney Walsh and Curtly Ambrose out of the West Indies side, it seems as if all the progress made by Jimmy Adams as captain has been dismantled. Why is it that a nation with such a history of talented fast bowlers and many hopes for the future is still so reliant on two ageing yet seemingly timeless giants? I'll give credit where credit's due - Courtney and Curtly are nothing short of legendary yet they trundle on scaring batsmen witless. Of course it can't last for too much longer - and what then for the WIndies? While Mervyn Dillon, Reon King and Nixon McLean show signs of talent, they seem to be overawed by just being in the same side as Walsh and Ambrose. ...ORIGINALLY WRITTEN September 2000 WEST INDIAN CRICKET IN THE PAST When the West Indies first played test cricket their captain was a white man, which was very unusual. The first cricketing superstar was Sir Learie Constantine. He was a brilliant fielder. The team in the 1950s was the first great West Indian team. The 3 Ws were in the side: Clyde Walcott, Everton Weekes and Sir Frank Worrell. All 3 batsmen were devastating hitters but each had their own style. The main spinners in the side were Sonny Ramadhin and Alf Valentine. In the last 1950s a young all-rounder Sir Garfield Sobers joined the team. He held the world record for the highest test score. ...discourages the lucrative and loyal spending Barmy Army from going back there. The welcome return of Simon Jones (Shin splints pending) to the frontline of the English test team couldn’t come soon enough. But for the A-Team, of which he was touring with it was a touch too early. The lightning fast paceman was dispatched to the West Indies to join the main side whilst ’England A’ produced another extremely unusual result on that Sub-Continent by being only the third side ever to allow a team to knock of 500 runs to win a match!. Losing to ‘South Zone’, a team that sounds like a piss poor boy band is not the best preparation for the England bowlers of the future.
