Truly world music
Review of Something Dangerous - Natacha Atlas by
natalka57
Advantages: lots of variety, quality performing
Disadvantages: too much variety makes it a bit of a mess
...Natacha Atlas' roots are in middle eastern pop. She has a haunting, rich voice that she really can use to great effect, and she does so on this album. Yes, there's arabic pop, there's also a lot of hindi, a bit of reggae, rap, R&B - you name it, it's probably on here... Listening to Something Dangerous, I get the feeling that it is trying to jam as many different styles as it can onto one CD, which is a shame, because all the tracks are really very good, but they don't always go together very well. However, if any album were to earn the title of 'world music', this would be it.
There is no way you're going to like every song on this album unless you have truly wide tastes and you don't mind them being juxtaposed one song after another. I personally find the listening effect very jarring - as an album it was a disappointing first listen...

More Murder in Krondor
Review of Krondor: The Assassins - Raymond E. Feist by
034keb
Advantages: Good second book, well written, well paced with excellent charaters
Disadvantages: Not as good as the original Riftwar series
...this was done cleverly. I feel that the book is excellently written, as all of Raymond E. Feist's are and the by using Jimmy the Hand, Pug, and Prince Arutha these characters are very likeable and between them can accomplish many things. The introduction of William as a member of the army and being Pug's son gives us another character that will fight the evil threatening the world, and William is a solid, loyal character. The book is the middle book of the trilogy and sets the scene for the final book nicely. The book reveals who one of the main enemies is, but leaves the identity of the Crawler still a mystery and the book is still action packed and Krondor is still tense because war can break out at any time.
I would definitely recommend this book to readers of all ages who enjoy the Fantasy genre of books. The book is an easy read and has less...

Eastern National bus Bus Company
Review of Eastern National Bus Company by
saundej
Advantages: Busses used to be green; frequent services to north Chelmsford suburbs
Disadvantages: Drivers smile only irregularly; journeying at peak school commuting time is dangerous
...travelling free, thanks to the gloriously old-fashioned system of state educational travel subsidy (which roughly translates into the provision of a bus pass). Take a trip on an Eastern National bus and you’ll find yourself almost taken to another world....

America the epitamy of Freedom
Review of Tragedy in the United States by
fidgetbrain
Advantages: NA
Disadvantages: NA
...at the sheer horror of it all slowly set in.
Initial estimates of 50,000 casualties, thankfully have diminished to approximately 5000 at the time of writing. 5000 deaths in one act !! That is why president GW Bush has called it an act of war. The sheer scale of the atrocity.
The fear I hold is that the American government has been noted in history as being trigger happy, ;- strike now ask questions later. Without cool and calculated reasoning the ramifications of striking against any body or country without definate concrete proof and the backing of the nato allied countries, could easily esculate into what will likely be a Middle Eastern War, with countries and factions within, striking back not just at the military targets but also at the civilians too.
As we all come to terms with the tragedy, do not even think of the perpatrators...

The Ways of Love
Review of The Map of Love - Ahdaf Soueif by
Mr.Love
Advantages: Good Story
Disadvantages: Nothing
.... As she comes to know the Egyptian people and falls in love with an Egyptian, the reader--along with Anna's granddaughter and great-granddaughter, who are reading the letters and diaries which reveal her story--learns much about the historical betrayals which have so complicated presentday relations between western and Arab countries.
Like most romances, this one requires you to accept a very high level of coincidence, but that is more than offset by fine descriptive writing, fully drawn characters, and the placing of a great many very recent Middle Eastern events into their Arab contexts. It is not surprising that this very well written book was shortlisted for the Booker Prize. What is surprising is that this Egyptian author is so successful in presenting events from an Arab point of view to a western audience--a view that is culturally...

An Exoctic Land of Platform Perils
Review of Prince of Persia 3D (PC) by
symoo_87
Advantages: More royal than corgies
Disadvantages: Slow response and tricky controls
...Way back in time, when PC's were made of wood and bits of glue, the original Prince of Persia pioneered the style of game play which was taken into three dimensions by Tomb Raider.
So what? Well it's back to challenge for the modern platform crown. But this time it's in 3D!
Unfortunately, the Prince doesn't quite manage to triumph, but the game has much to recommend it over other platform would-be kings.
A good start is made by increasing the graphical wow-factor over the familiar exploits of Lara. After the dull first level, everything explodes into a world of imagination and colour. The whole game's set in a Sinbad-styled Middle Eastern world d of adventure and your exploits take you to a series of lovingly rendered locations. With designs like a giant castle suspended from a gargantuan balloon, platforming has rarely been more...

eastern gags
Review of Zadig - Voltaire by
lewiscrofts
Advantages: laughs galore
Disadvantages: slow
...This tale is slightly more serious (but not much) than Voltaire’s more famous work “Candide”. It takes place in the middle east and concerns a young man Zadig whose intellect continually gets him into trouble and who is continually duped by women. The book’s main drive comes in the final chapters where Voltaire addresses the concept of Providentialism. This, though partially accepted, is rejected in line with Voltaire’s idea that all systematic beliefs should be rejected until they are subjected to empirical testing. It nevertheless remains an interesting work, but, for me, forever in the shadow of “Candide”....

The first one, but there is more to come
Review of Stormbreaker - Anthony Horowitz by
Legolas2
Advantages: Great book, really exciting
Disadvantages: Quite disgusting in some places
...and has a knack for getting himself into trouble.
Herod Sayle = an evil Middle-Eastern multi millionaire that has produced thousands of state of the art computers and has offered one to every school in the country.
Yassen Gregovorich = A Russian spy who kills anyone he is told to, except Alex.
Alan Blunt = A man of high authority in MI6 and thinks Alex was born to be a spy.
Mrs. Jones = Alan Blunt's secretary whose favourite snack is mints.
*******The storyline*******
There is a brilliant storyline to this book and I will give it to you now.

Within days he's gone from schoolboy to superspy. Forcibly recruited into MI6, Alex has to take part in grueling SAS training exercises. Then, armed with his own special set of gadgets, he...

A World Class Team
Review of Yugoslavia by
dwll5
Advantages: Skillful
Disadvantages:
...I believed that Yuguslavia is a team with its own class. They are capable of performing. This can be clearly seen when they are trailing and later came back from behind to win the game. Initially I see the potential of them getting into semi-finals or even final. But after the qualifying match against Spain. I believed that they have been robbed. The referee during that match was so bias that resulted Yugoslavia lose the match. Looking it carefully, there shouldn't be a penalty at all.Well, as I said again it is the western europe against the eastern europe and everytime, the eastern europe will lose out. Well Yugoslavia eventought you were being cheated and robbed....

Weird, and not wonderful at all
Review of Inland Empire (DVD) by
MCFruitbat
Advantages: Involving for the first half an hour
Disadvantages: Descends into self -indulgent, random nonsense rapidly after that
...There is not a lot left to be said about David Lynch. Opinion will always be divided as to whether he is an ingenious visionary or an incomprehensible lunatic. At his best, in films like Blue Velvet, Lost Highway and Wild At Heart, the audience is captivated by the teasing glimpses into a mysterious alternate world where the truth always remains tantalizingly out of sight. The truth remains unclear for most of Inland Empire as well, but after nearly three hours - including a completely incomprehensible middle hour and a half - it is impossible to remain interested.
The story (as far as I could tell) is concerned with a famous actress Laura Dern who lands a part in a big Hollywood picture shortly before finding out that the movie is in fact a remake of a German picture that was never completed because the lead actors were murdered...
