The Joy of Basel
Review of Basel (Switzerland) by sonofsanta

Advantages: Great for travelling, friendly, easy to get around, clean
Disadvantages: Swiss German is impossible to understand unless you grew up with it!

...and honour of living in Basel as part of my degree. I was working for one of the many chemical companies near the centre, and living in one of the smaller suburbs, Muttenz. I've been back in England now for ... Read review

I enjoyed Basel whilst I was there. I liked the fact there were little things of interest to see all over the place. Also I liked getting the train to Basle and then leaving from Basel. by imogen49

Fantastic service
Review of Radisson SAS Hotel, Basel by Jen1978

Advantages: Centrally located, very friendly staff
Disadvantages: None I can think of...

Ok, so this is really a business hotel with not a huge deal of local character or atmosphere but we had a great pre-Christmas break here! Try and get a deal whereby the breakfast is included as it is the biggest and best breakfast you will ever see! T ... Read review

Stylish hotel but stereotypical Swiss pricing
Review of Hotel Royal, Basel by t3Cougar

Advantages: Close to German train station, free public transport when you stay, quiet rooms, stylish decor
Disadvantages: Some rooms are smaller than others, quite a way out from the center

This hotel is as good as it looks in the pictures online. It is a four star hotel but the staff are five. Since it is only very small (16 rooms) you will be lavished with attention. The rooms were modern, but they had been to IKEA a bit too much and ... Read review

Unsettling
Review of Basel (Switzerland) by JVL

Advantages: Cathedral, old town, plenty to keep you occupied
Disadvantages: I just didn't feel at home

Basel is a curious city – despite visiting several times over the past year, I still haven’t been won over by its charms, and I don’t really know why! Maybe it’s the strange mix of cultures that exist in this city that sits a littl ... Read review

I used to go often and I concur with your thoughts on the oddness of this place. I arrived once during Carnival (Feb? March?) and found hundreds of very serious Swiss folk walking around dressed immaculately as penguins, characters from the Arabian Nights and so on. It blew my mind - even when they are having fun, it's just so 'structured'. Off this weekend - lets see if anything has changed by koshkha
I was there last week - only because I was going to Strasbourg and the BA flight times to Basel are far better than to Strasbourg. The airport was really nice, but stragngly quiet although that could have been because of the restructuring of Swiss Air. Drove a little way into the town and your comments bore out what I thought, although as I said the airport was great and makes a good choice if you dont mind getting in the hire car for an hour or so. by plane_boy
