The best place to stay in Guatemala City!
Review of Posada Belen, Guatemala City by Wowvoyager

Advantages: Charming and unique hotel with wonderful Gautemalan artifacts and ambiance (a home away from home) run by delightful people.
Disadvantages: None

The Pasado Belen Museo Inn was the nicest hotel that I stayed in during my Central America tour. The hotel is owned and run by a wonderful married couple Francesca and René. Francesca, Rafael and the rest of the staff there, made me feel welcome from th ... Read review

Panajachel and the lakeside villages
Review of Panajachel (Guatemala) by kb1532

Advantages: Pretty markets; a chance to explore Guatemalan villages
Disadvantages: Hassling by street kids into buying biros!

Panajachel has a market much like those of Antigua and Chichicastenango, but with a wide variety of excellent local art to buy (I bought 2 small paintings of the lake for next to nothing, and they are a perfect reminder of my travels - see photos). A ... Read review

My favourite place in Central America
Review of Chichicastenango (Guatemala) by kb1532

Advantages: Colourful, vibrant markets; a chance to immerse yourself in local culture
Disadvantages: May get hassled to see a pagan sacrifice of a chicken

Chichicastenango is about an hour from Panajachel, high up in the western Guatemalan mountains. It is a fairly small town, still stuck in its old ways, with a few hostels and cheap hotels for the budget traveller. Even if you are not an avid buyer o ... Read review

The old capital of Guatemala retains its charms
Review of Antigua Guatemala (Guatemala) by kb1532

Advantages: Gorgeous town with a lot of character, plenty to do, and great markets.
Disadvantages: No alcohol after 8 on a Sunday

I travelled through Guatemala as a student backpacker, but there are lots of things to do for any age group/interest. For the bargain hunters I thoroughly recommend the colourful and vibrant markets, but make sure you haggle (the best price is often gain ... Read review

hey kb. It's cool to hear from someone else who has visited Antigua. I travelled there in 2001 and thought it was a lovely, cosmopolitian place. I also treked up a volcano while i was there which was an experience and a half!!!! C Happy travels by honeylamb
Thought of this place for my honeymoon but ended up booking a cruise (ooooh I hear you say, but no, it was really cheap because of 9/11!!!) and this way we know the weather will be nice (August).... Soph by SophieWehr

All bark and no bite
Review of Antigua Guatemala (Guatemala) by sidinz

Advantages: Very picturesque colonial town
Disadvantages: Not much to do

I was very pleased to be arriving in Antigua. I'd heard a lot about it, and it was one of "the" places on the Guatemala circuit. I arrived late afternoon and booked into accommodation. There is plenty of it, and to suit every budget. Shortly afterwards, ... Read review

The Highs and Lows of Xela
Review of Quetzaltenango (Guatemala) by sidinz

Advantages: Lots of amazing scenery, helpful people and a chance to see a truly different culture.
Disadvantages: The necessity to ride on antiquated and crowded public transport.

Quetzaltenango, also known as Xela (shela) is located in western Guatemala, close to the Mexican border. It is in the Guatemalan Highlands, and home to awe-inspiring scenery. The highlands are quite simply spectacular. An excerpt from my travel journal: " ... Read review

Why is this place not better known?
Review of Tikal (Guatemala) by hrs2004

Advantages: Spectacular ruins in a green setting
Disadvantages: Becoming more popular and wildlife is suffering

I have visited Tikal twice now - once about 8 years ago and again two years ago. I say this, because I noticed the difference in the amount of birdlife between the two visits. Perhaps I was unlucky, but there seemed to be far fewer birds on this trip. Hav ... Read review

Tikal your fancy
Review of Tikal (Guatemala) by Hmatt

Advantages: Breathtaking ruins in vivid jungle packed full of rainbow coloured birds and lively animals.
Disadvantages: Violent crime awaits the unwary.

Far north in Guatemala’s El Petén State you will find this country’s must see attraction. Immense Mayan ruins that in 750 AD were once home to perhaps 100,000 people thrust up from the jungle floor and tower high above the steaming canopy. Toucans and p ... Read review
