I dislike train travel, finding it claustrophobic and expensive, so the coach is thje obvious alternative. Coach or bus travel is a territory more or less divided between National Express and Megabus, when it comes to booking online. Megabus is better for the following reasons.
Megabus use double decker coaches which means there is always a good chance of getting a seat with plenty of space around you, and plenty of leg room. Not so with National Express, single decker buses which are usually crammed so tightly up to the last seat. Remember that even on Megabus it is now mandatory to wear a seat belt, which means a certain amount of discomfort.
Booking is much easier and quicker with Megabus if you have a Paypal account. You simply log into your Paypal account when it tells you and the whole thing is over and done with in a jiffy, whereas National Express does not offer a Paypal facility, so you have to enter all your bank details every time.
Megabus offer seats from £1.00, but you have to book about seventeen days in advance to get these. The fare is a one way fare. You are unlikely to get your return ticket at the same price. A registration fee of 50p is added so the real minimum fare is £1.50.
Megabus, unfortunately, does not go to as many destinations as National Express. It will take you to Scotland, but for some reason, it does not go to Brighton. Megabus does not always use its own coaches. If you go to Oxford on Megabus, you will have to take the Oxford Tube coach, so be aware that it will not always be the smiley face bus you need to look for.
When you have finished making your online booking, you will be given a reservation number. Most people prefer to make a printout of the final page and take it with them to show to the driver as a ticket, but you can, if you like, just make a note of your reservation number, and give that to the driver. Once you have done that you can look forward to a smooth, comfortable drive. through pleasant scenery. You can relax because all the stops are announced well in advance to give you plenty of time to get your stuff together and prepare to leave the bus.
Some buses have wifi, so you can take your laptop computer to play with on the journey. However the time taken to get to somewhere like Oxford is quite short, only 100 minutes from Victoria Coach Station, so you may prefer just to sit back and take in the view.
The buses do come equipped with toilets, rather small and cramped. best to go before you go! Although this is a very safe method of travel, there are emergency exits and fire extinguishers and the like, and it is wise to pay attention to the instructions for using these. There is room to store hand luggage above each seat. Big suitcases and such items go in the storage department in the side of the bus. Bon voyage!
